Alberto Montanari’s research focuses on climate change and the design of hydraulic works for watershed management and mitigation of natural hazards. He is the author of more than 150 publications in international scientific journals.
He is president of ARCA, the integrated water service provider in Reggio Emilia, since 2024. He served as director of the DICAM Department at the University of Bologna (2015–2021) and president of the European Geosciences Union (EGU, 2019–2021).
He has been awarded the Union Service Award by EGU, fellowship of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), Darcy Medal from EGU, William Kaula Award from AGU, and Dooge Medal from IAHS/UNESCO/WMO. He was editor-in-chief of the scientific journal Water Resources Research (published by AGU) from 2013 to 2017, and is currently editor-in-chief of AGU Advances (by AGU) since 2025.
He has been teaching at the University of Bologna since 1998, promoting interactive learning with freely available dynamic supporting materials.
