Alberto Maria Martelli was born in Bologna on 31.08.1956.
1981: MD degree (magna cum laude), University of Bologna, School
of Medicine
1983-85: Italian National Research Council fellowship, Institute
of Human Anatomy, University of Bologna, School of Medicine
1985: Postdoctoral degree in Haematology, University of Bologna,
School of Medicine
1985-87: Post-doctoral research associate, Department of
Biological Sciences, State University of New York at Buffalo, NY,
USA
1987-92: Research Associate, Institute of Human Anatomy,
University of Bologna, School of Medicine
1992-2000: Associate Professor of Human Anatomy, University of
Trieste School of Medicine
2000-: Full Professor of Human Anatomy, University of Bologna
Since 1988, his main research interest has been focused on lipid
dependent-signal transduction pathways. He has studied the nuclear
polyphosphoinositide cycle during cell growth and differentiation
also in relationship with nuclear migration of protein kinase C.
His studies led to the first identification of a nuclear
phospholipase C (PLC beta 1) which is activated in response to
insulin-like growth factor-1 stimulation (see Martelli et al.,
Nature 358: 242-245, 1992).
Since 2003, he is actively investigating the importance of the
phosphoinositide 3-kinase/Akt signaling pathway in determining
survival and drug resistance of human leukemia cells. This pathway
could be a target for innovative therapeutic strategies for
treating leukemia patients.
