Alberto Armigliato was born in Bologna, Italy, on 18 August 1970.

 

Education

He obtained the Degree in Physics at the University of Bologna on 19 July 1996.

Ha obtained the PhD in Geophysics at the University of Genova on 15 February 2002.

 

Present position

Starting from 06 July 2017, he is Associate Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Alma Mater Studiorum - University of Bologna.

On 04/04/2017 he obtained the "Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale" to Associate Professorship in the Academic Field 04/A4 (Geophysics).

 

Previous contracts

Alberto Armigliato benefited from the following contracts (in reverse chronological order):

  • From 01 October 2013 to 05 July 2017 he was researcher with a fixed-term employment contract at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Bologna, pursuant to art. 24 paragraph 3 letter b) of Law no. 240/2010 (senior), full-time for the three-year research program: "Definition and computation of large earthquakes and tsunami scenarios in the Mediterranean region as a contribute to the development of warning systems".

  • From 14 October 2011 to 30 September 2013 he was researcher with a fixed-term employment contract at the Department of Physics of the University of Bologna, pursuant to art. 24 paragraph 3 letter a) of Law no. 240/2010 (junior), full-time for the three-year research program: "Definition and computation of tsunami scenarios for the development of the prototype of an emergency-oriented decision support platform as a module of an early warning system".

  • From 12 April 2011 to 11 October 2011, Coordinated and Continuous Collaboration contract at the Department of Physics of the University of Bologna, in the framework of the EU-funded Project TRIDEC (FP7, ICT-2009.4.3, Grant Agreement 258723), entitled “Collaboration to the development of a decision support platform in case of emergencies associated to natural hazards such as tsunamis, with particular reference to the scenarios characterisation”.

  • From 04 March 2010 to 03 March 2011, Coordinated and Continuous Collaboration contract at the Department of Physics of the University of Bologna, in the framework of the FIRB Project RBAP04EF3A_004 (Project 200564), entitled “Development of new technologies for the protection and the defence of the territory against natural risks”, sub-project “Sea level monitoring for the identification and the study of tsunamis”.

Teaching Activity

In Academic Year 2023-2024, Alberto Armigliato taught Module 2 (8 hours) of the course entitled “La natura del neutrino (di Majorana o Dirac) e la fisica dei terremoti e del Sistema Terra” in the framework of the Collegio Superiore of Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna.

In Academic Year 2023-2024, Alberto Armigliato was invited as a Visiting Lecturer in the Master’s Programme in Physics of the ICTP-EAIFR (International Centre for Theoretical Physics – East African Institute for Fundamental Research) at the University of Kigali (Rwanda) to teach the course of “Theoretical Seismology” (GEP6362, 20 hours) in Year 2/option Geophysics of the Master’s Programme.

Starting in Academic Year 2019-20, Alberto Armigliato teaches Module 1 of the course entitled "Tsunamis" in the frame of the PhD Course in "Future Earth, Climate Change and Societal Challenges" at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna (starting from Cycle XXXV).

From Academic Year 2014-15 to Academic Year 2018-19, Alberto Armigliato taught the course entitled "Modelling of tsunami waves" in the frame of the PhD Course in Geophysics at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna (Cycles XXX through XXXIV).

Starting from Academic Year 2020-21, Alberto Armigliato teaches Module 1 of the course entitled “Fundamental Physics of the Solid Earth” in the framework of the SPICES (“Space Missions Science, Design and Applications”) Professional Master’s Programme (2nd level) at the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna.

Starting from Academic Year 2017-18, Alberto Armigliato teaches the course "Foundations of Geophysics" (code 31906) which is part of the curriculum of the Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Physics of the Earth System at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna.

In Academic Years 2017-18 and 2018-19, Alberto Armigliato taught the course "Mathematics", module 1 of the course entitled "Mathematics, Statistics and Physics" (code 65965) which is part of the curriculum of the First cycle degree programme (L) in Aquaculture and Fish Production Hygiene at the Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine — Campus of Cesena at Cesenatico (Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna).

Scientific Activity

Alberto Armigliato is the reference person for the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the University of Bologna for the Research Agreement with the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security entitled “Test of the good practices for the study of the potential interaction between offshore activities and natural hazards”, started on 1st December 2022 and ending on 31st October 2025.

Alberto Armigliato is participating in the project WALL: “Evolution of the Volcanic Environment in Western Rwanda with Climate Change: Impact on Health and Mitigation” (Grant ID: GCRW-CL001) under the “Grand Challenges Rwanda: Accelerating Catalyzing Solutions for Climate Change's Impact on Health” call-for-proposals. Duration: 2 years (July 2024 – June 2026). The project is coordinated by Prof. Catherine Meriaux (ICTP-EAIFR at the University of Kigali, Rwanda).

Alberto Armigliato has been the reference person for the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the University of Bologna for the Research Agreement with EUROLINK S.C.p.A. in the framework of the project entitled: «Permanent Crossing of the Messina Straits and Road and Railway Connection on the Calbraia and Sicily Sides”: final report sent in September 2024.

Alberto Armigliato has been the reference person for the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the University of Bologna for the Research Agreement with the Italian Ministry of the Economic Development, General Directorate for the Infrastructures and the Security of the Energy and Geomining Services, entitled “H&RA-Lacinia”, 1 October 2020 – 31st October 2022.

Alberto Armigliato has been the reference person at the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the University of Bologna for the commissioned research contract with T.EN Italy Solutions S.p.a., entitled “Detailed inundation mapping for earthquake-induced tsunamis in the coastal area of Vado Ligure”, between January and May 2024.

Alberto Armigliato has been the reference person at the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the University of Bologna for two commissioned research contracts with T.EN Italy Solutions S.p.a., the first entitled “Study and research on the tsunamis related to the emergency project called “Adjustment of the FSRU – Floating Storage and Regasification Unit” of Piombino, eastern pier”, the second entitled“Study and research on the tsunamis induced by possible landslides on the Piombino Promontory”, between December 2022 and March 2023.

Alberto Armigliato has been one of the two official representatives for Italy in the COST Action CA18109 AGITHAR “Accelerating Global science In Tsunami HAzard and Risk Analysis”, coordinated by Prof. Jörn Behrens, University of Hamburg (Germany), 18/03/2019 – 17/09/2023.

Since July 2021, Alberto Armigliato is serving as the Coordinator of the Logistics Commission of the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna.

Alberto Armigliato has been a member of the “Gruppo di Lavoro ai fini della valutazione scientifica dei modelli probabilistici di pericolosità di lungo termine per terremoti e maremoti generati da sisma per il territorio nazionale” (Working Group for the scientific evaluation of the long-term probabilistic hazard models for earthquakes and earthquake-induced tsunamis for the national territory) of the Italian Department for Civil Protection from July 2018 to December 2019.

Alberto Armigliato acted as expert advisor for the TSUMAPS-NEAM Project (Probabilistic Tsunami Hazard Maps in the NEAM Region), coordinated by Dr. Roberto Basili (INGV, Rome, Italy), ECHO/SUB/2015/718568/PREV26, 1st January 2016 – 30th June 2017

Other activities

Alberto Armigliato was appointed as one of the reviewers for the PhD thesis of Dr. Anjar Tri Laksono (University of Pécs, Institute of Geography and Earth Sciences, Department of Geology and Meteorology, Pécs, Hungary) entitled “Hybrid Method Assesses Coastal Morphology Using Satellite Images and Fluid Dynamics”. The task was carried out in June 2025.

Alberto Armigliato was appointed as reviewer for the PhD thesis of Dr. Başak Hafize Bayraktar (Dipartimento di Strutture per l’Ingegneria e l’Architettura, Università di Napoli Federico II, Naples, Italy). The task was carried out in the first months of 2022.

Alberto Armigliato was a member of the adjudication committee evaluating the doctoral thesis of Dr. Martin Wronna (Faculdade de Ciências de Universidade de Lisboa, Portugal). The disputation was held online on 2 February 2022.

Alberto Armigliato was a member of the adjudication committee evaluating the doctoral thesis of Dr. Louise Cordrie. The disputation was held on 13 December 2021 at the Université de Paris (France) and online.

Alberto Armigliato was a member of the adjudication committee evaluating the doctoral thesis of Dr. Finn Løvholt. The public disputation was held on 25 April 2008 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Oslo (Norway).

Alberto Armigliato was invited and participated as an expert in the “Expert consultation meeting - Tsunami risk in Europe: Status, research gaps and needs in the context of early warning systems”, organised by the European Commission, Brussels, Belgium, 28 February – 1 March 2005.

"Third Mission" activities

“Maremoti nel Mediterraneo: le sfide future”, held on 30th May 2024 in the framework of the initiative entitled “Futuro e Ambiente – Un’alleanza indispensabile”, Auditorium Enzo Biagi – Salaborsa, Piazza del Nettuno, 3 – 40124 Bologna. The initiative was organised by the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” of the Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna in cooperation with the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), Bologna Section.

Demonstration of a seismic refraction survey at the Liceo Linguistico “Giulio Cesare - Manara Valgimigli”, Viserba (RN), held on 30th May 2025. Classes 4°, 4B, 4D and 4E were involved in the framework of the wave propagation topic studied in the Maths and Physics courses.

“I maremoti nel Mediterraneo e il relativo Sistema d’allerta”, held on 11th May 2023 at the Auditorium MUG – Magazzini Generativi, via Emilia Levante 9/F, Bologna in the framework of the initiative “Futuro sostenibile – Il contributo della Geofisica”, promoted by ASVIS (“Alleanza Italiana per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile”) – Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile 2023.

Demonstration of a seismic refraction survey at the Istituto Tecnico Agrario “G. Scarabelli” of Imola (BO), held on 12th May 2022. Classes 2B and 2C were involved in the framework of the wave propagation topic studied in the Maths and Physics courses.

“Quando la Terra trema” (“When Earth shakes”). Held in Bologna at “Santo Bevitore” pub on May 17, 2017 in the frame of the initiative “Pint of Science 2017”.

“La Geofisica: indagine su un pianeta irrequieto” ("Geophysics: investigation into a restless planet"). Held on 6 April 2009 at the ITCS "Monti" of Ferrara in the framework of the initiative entitled “Un pozzo di scienza 2009” ("A well of science 2009") organised by Hera Group.
