Andrea Ugolini
Andrea Ugolini graduated in Architecture with honours (110/110 cum laude) from the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Florence in 1987.
He is currently Associate Professor of Architectural Conservation (CEAR-11/B) in the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna, where he served as Assistant Professor (Researcher) from 2007 to 2014.
In November 2018 he obtained the Italian National Scientific Qualification (ASN) for Full Professorship in Architectural Conservation and History of Architecture (Academic Recruitment Field 08/E2).
PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Qualified as an architect in 1987, he practised professionally from 1988 to 2007.
Between 1988 and 1990 he participated in and directed archaeological excavation campaigns in Italy (Necropolis of Piazza Stamira, Ancona; courtyard of the Malatesta Fortress, Rimini; Villa Clelia, Imola; Palazzo Albizzi, Cesena; Porta Galliana, Rimini) and abroad (Hatra, Iraq).
From 1990 to 1992, on behalf of the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage, he prepared A and SU inventory records for the historic centres of Brisighella and Riolo Terme and for the fortresses of the Lamone and Senio valleys. During the same period, he carried out numerous architectural surveys and stratigraphic analyses, including those of the Tempio Malatestiano in Rimini, the ravelin of the Rocca Roveresca in Mondavio, the Palazzo dei Priori in Perugia, the Throne Room of the Ducal Palace in Urbino, the Church of Santa Maria in Vado in Ferrara, the Sanctuary of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Fornò (Forlì-Cesena), and the Church of San Francesco al Prato in Perugia.
His professional activity has focused primarily on the conservation and restoration of historic buildings, archaeological sites and archaeological remains.
He has acted as designer and site director for the conservation and restoration of the Fregoso Fortress and the Church of San Francesco della Rosa in Sant'Agata Feltria (Pesaro and Urbino), the forecourt of the Tempio Malatestiano, the Church of Santa Maria Annunziata alla Colonnella, the Olivetan Monastery in Rimini, the defensive walls of the Castle of San Clemente, the Oratory of the Blessed Virgin and the façade of the Parish Church in San Clemente, the Malatesta Gates of the Tomba di Castelleale, as well as the rehabilitation of numerous historic buildings not subject to statutory heritage protection.
He has participated in and won architectural design competitions in both Italy and abroad.
ACADEMIC APPOINTMENTS
From 1997 to 2006 he was Adjunct Professor of History of Architecture, Theory and History of Conservation, and Historic Building Construction at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Ferrara. From 1994 to 2004 he also taught Historic Building Construction at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Florence.
Between 2000 and 2007 he taught at the School for Mosaic Conservation in Ravenna, a branch of the national conservation school operated by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (Florence) on behalf of the Italian Ministry for Cultural Heritage.
From 2007 to 2014 he was Assistant Professor (Researcher) in Architectural Conservation (ICAR/19) at the "Aldo Rossi" Faculty of Architecture, University of Bologna (Cesena Campus).
At the "Aldo Rossi" Faculty of Architecture, and subsequently within the Department of Architecture of the University of Bologna, he has been responsible for the following courses:

PHD PROGRAMME
Since 2008, he has been a member of the Academic Board of the PhD Programme in Architecture at the University of Bologna, where he supervises doctoral research in the field of Architectural Conservation. He previously served as Coordinator of the programme's educational activities. The interdisciplinary PhD Programme in Architecture brings together the Department of Architecture's third-cycle research and training activities.
MASTER'S PROGRAMMES
Since 2017 he has been a member of the teaching staff of the Second-Level Master's Programme in Landscape Design: Historic Gardens and Layered Landscapes, coordinated by Professor Tessa Matteini at the University of Florence, where he teaches subjects related to Architectural Conservation (CEAR-11/B).
Since 2024 he has also been a member of the teaching staff of the Second-Level Master's Programme in Conservation, Enhancement and Management of Historic Parks, Gardens and Archaeological Sites at the University of Bologna.

Conservation of the Phoenician–Punic defensive walls at the archaeological site of Sarcapos (Villaputzu, Sardinia). Project developed in collaboration with the excavation director, Professor Raimondo Secci, Department of History and Cultures, University of Bologna.
