Curriculum vitae

Vittorio Maniezzo is full professor in computer science, at the Computer Science and Engineering Department of the University of Bologna. He has been working on heuristic algorithms for combinatorial optimization for decades, first contributing to the original design of Ant System optimization, then bringing forth the area of matheuristics. He is currently interested in operational analytics, combining matheuristics with predictive modules.

He graduated in Electronics and Computer Science Engineering at the Polytechnic of Milano, where he also got a Ph.D. in Computer Science Engineering. He then won a fellowship at the Joint Research Center of the European Commission (Ispra). His academic career went through the positions of researcher, associate professor then full professor, always at the Cesena site of the University of Bologna and always with the affiliation to the Department of Computer Science of this same University. Among his research achievements, he was one of the original designers of the Ant System algorithm – later evolved as Ant Colony Optimization (ACO). More recently, he has been one of the promoters of the active community on matheuritics (2006 to present). Both contributions have given rise to a series of specific, currently active, international workshops. He is the author of more than a hundred scientific works, including over 40 listed in the scopus or ISI databases.

Vittorio Maniezzo is a member of the editorial boards of the journals OR spectrum, Swarm Intelligence, Operational Research - An International Journal (ORIJ) and International Journal of Applied Metaheuristic Computing (IJAMC), besides being in the program committee of several international scientific conferences. He is ranked among the Top Italian Scientists (TIS) in computer science, with over 30000 Google Scholar citations (almost 11000 on scopus). He has been involved in several applied research projects, both of public and of private interest, mainly on applications of data analytics to process optimization.

Vittorio Maniezzo, since 1997, took responsibility for scientific and technical research units in various research projects, in part by Europeans (from FP4 until 7), national (National Research Plan for the T/A, local (Province, municipality of Cesena FC) as well as in industrial projects. In 1997 he was founding partner of an academic spin-off, Nemsys s.r.l., specialized in software for logistics. In 2010 he exited Nemsys as he was a founding member of the university spin-off Keisna s.r.l. specialized in industrial application of optimization techniques and quantitative decision support.
