Short Bio

Stefano Mariani is an Associate Professor of Structural Mechanics at the Department of Civil, Chemical, Environmental and Materials Engineering (DICAM) of the University of Bologna. He received his Master’s Degree (Laurea Specialistica) in Civil Engineering from the University of Perugia and his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California San Diego (UCSD), USA. Subsequently, he worked as a postdoctoral researcher first at UCSD and then at Imperial College London (UK), and worked in industry as a Senior R&D Engineer at Guided Ultrasonics Ltd (UK). In 2023, he returned to Italy after being awarded the competitive 'Rita Levi Montalcini' national grant for young researchers and, since 2024, he also holds the position of Honorary Lecturer at Imperial College London. His research interests focus on Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and non-destructive evaluation (NDE) techniques, with a specific emphasis on ultrasonic guided wave propagation.
