Simone Martini holds a Laurea and a PhD in Computer Science from the
Università di Pisa. Before coming to Bologna in 2002, he was Research Associate and Associate Professor at Università di Pisa, and Professor of Computer Science at
Università di Udine.
He was Head of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (2015-2018) and member of the Board of Governors of the University of di Bologna, 2021-2024.
He has been a visiting scientist at the Systems Research Center of Digital Equipment Corporation, Palo Alto; at Stanford University; at École normale supérieure, Paris; at Université Paris 13; at University of California at Santa Cruz; at the Collegium-Institute d'Études Avancées de Lyon (Fellow 2018-2019).
Member of the team Focus, INRIA Sophia Antipolis-Méditerranée (2009-2023); member of the Council of the Commission on History and Philosophy of Computing of the Intl. Union for History and Philosophy of Science, 2017-2023.
He has been researching the foundations of programming languages for several decades. Today his interests have shifted more toward the epistemology, history and teaching of computer science.
