Riccardo Russo

Riccardo is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Bologna, working at the intersection of physics, music, and computer science. His research focuses on efficient numerical methods for simulating musical instrument vibration, including real-time implementations.

He holds a B.Sc. in Physics from the University of Bologna and a first-level Master’s in Sound Engineering from the University of Rome Tor Vergata. He joined IK Multimedia as a C++ developer, building audio plugins with JUCE, and later completed an M.Sc. in Sound and Music Computing at Aalborg University Copenhagen. His thesis focused on the physical modelling and optimisation of an EMT 140 plate reverb, including an internship at GRAME-CNCM in Lyon, where he developed a Faust library for finite-difference physical modelling synthesis. In 2025, he earned a PhD on non-iterative simulation techniques for nonlinear string vibration in musical acoustics within the ERC-funded NEMUS project. During his PhD, he was a visiting researcher at the University of Edinburgh, working on efficient FDTD algorithms for real-time string simulation.
