Prof. C. Q. Jiang Keynote: Small Leap in Progress: Next-generation Nanocrystalline Wireless EV Charger

Within the course of Power Electronic Converters M will be held the seminar "Small Leap in Progress: Next-generation Nanocrystalline Wireless EV Charger". The seminar will be delivered by Prof. C. Q. Jiang, from the State Key Laboratory of Terahertz and Millimeter Waves, City University of Hong Kong in Room 0.5 on 03.06.2025 from 16:15 to 17:00.

Abstract:
Electric vehicles (EVs) stand out for their ultra-low carbon emissions, making them essential for energy conservation and emission reduction in road transportation, mitigating climate change, and improving air quality. However, most current fast EV chargers require users to manually connect the charging cable to the vehicle, posing inconvenience and even a risk of electric shock. In contrast, the increasingly popular Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) eliminates the need for physical contact, providing a safer and more convenient charging experience. We will demonstrate a new high-power 22 kW nanocrystalline smart wireless charging technology, positioning it as a key EV component. Instead of the conventional ferrite wireless charging with low magnetic saturation (0.45 T), high core loss, and poor thermal performance, we are cohesively designing and manufacturing a new laminated nanocrystalline alloy (FeCuNbSiB) strip with a thickness of less than 18 µm and optimizing it as a magnetic core for a wireless EV charging system, which can help enhance the magnetic saturation (1.2 T), reduce the core loss, improve the thermal robustness, and compact the system size. Laboratory measurements show that the DC system efficiency reaches 97.5%, with AC transmission efficiency between the magnetic coupling mechanisms as high as 98.67%. This progress will lead to the final fully convenient and intelligent EV power management and utilization in the foreseeable future.
