Born in 1963, I studied Mathematics after completing secondary school with a scientific curriculum. I later graduated in Languages at the University of Bologna with a thesis in Slavic Philology on the Mongol invasions of Old Rus’ (L-LIN/21), and subsequently in Eastern History with a thesis in Iranian Philology on Ossetian festivals and calendars (L-OR/14). My doctoral research focused on medieval Alania, while my postdoctoral work examined personal names in Scythian. From 2002 to 2011, I served as Secretary of the Emilia-Romagna branch of IsIAO, and from 2004 to 2011 as Secretary of the training courses for peace workers organised by the Province of Ravenna. I have been a member of IsIAO, a founding member of the International Association for Intercultural Studies of the Melammu Project, a member of the Medical and Surgical Society of Bologna, and a member of ASIAC. I am a resident corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Bologna Institute, Class of Moral Sciences, and I hold the Italian National Scientific Qualification for Full Professorship in academic recruitment field 10/N1. I have participated in five research expeditions to the Yaghnob Valley. My main research interests include the Outer Iran, especially the Scythians and Alans; North-Eastern Iranian languages; Caucasian and Palaeo-Siberian languages; and nomadism. At the University of Bologna, I have taught courses in Religious History of the Iranian World, Iranian Philology, History, Civilisation and Religions of the Peoples of the Caucasus, Peoples and Cultures of Central Asia, and Russian History. I currently teach History of the Iranian Peoples in the degree programme in Cultural Heritage; History of the Byzantine and Ottoman Mediterranean in the degree programme in History, Societies and Cultures of the Mediterranean; History of Nomadism and History and Places of the Silk Road in the degree programme in International Cooperation on Human Rights and Intercultural Heritage; and Philology, Linguistics and Religious History of Iran in the degree programme in Archaeological, Artistic and Landscape Heritage: History, Protection and Enhancement. Each year, I also contribute to the degree programme in Cultural Heritage by offering three workshops: Other Writing Systems, Peoples and Cultures of the Caucasus, and Borders and Conflicts.
