Full Professor of General Physics at the University of Bologna, he conducts research in Elementary Particle Physics.
As member of the ATLAS experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider in Geneva, he is co-author of about 1,600 papers in international journals [h-index: 136 (Scopus), 262 (Google Scholar)].
He received the “Pietro Bassi” Prize of the Italian Physical Society for his contributions to meson spectroscopy, and the 2013 HEPP Prize of the European Physical Society, as a member of the ATLAS Collaboration, for the discovery of the Higgs boson.
He has served on the Board of Directors of Fondazione Alma Mater, as Senator of the Alma Mater Studiorum, and as Director of the Department of Physics and Astronomy “Augusto Righi” (2015–2021). Since 2023, he has chaired the National Scientific Committee for the Italian National Scientific Qualification in Experimental Physics of Fundamental Interactions.
He recently conceived and coordinated Fisica Experience, an innovative museum devoted to space and time, part of the University Museum System, where he serves as Scientific Director.
