Short Bio

Mattia Bottino is a PhD Candidate in Public Governance, Management and Policy at the University of Bologna - Department of Political and Social Sciences. His doctoral research examines the theoretical-conceptual and empirical interrelations among participatory democracy, self-management, and federalism in selected federal or highly decentralized South American states. From August to December 2025, he was Visiting PhD Candidate at the Centro de Estudos da Metrópole (Universade de São Paulo and Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento) in São Paulo, Brazil.

From 2022 to 2025, he worked as Researcher at the Institute for Comparative Federalism of Eurac Research, studying participatory budgeting in Italy and on local-level participatory democracy in the Alpine region, especially in the Autonomous Provinces of Bolzano/Bozen and Trento. He has also carried out research on territorial autonomy and minority rights in Italy and France, with a special focus on Corsica. Go to the Curriculum vitae
