Mattia Bottino is a PhD Candidate in Public Governance, Management and Policy at the University of Bologna (Department of Political and Social Sciences). He also partakes in the INCT Participa, as a member of the Núcleo de Democracia e Ação Coletiva at the Centro Brasileiro de Análise e Planejamento (CEBRAP).
His doctoral research examines the theoretical-conceptual and empirical interrelations among democratic innovations, self-management, and federalism in Brazil and Venezuela.
He is currently a Visiting PhD Candidate at the École des hautes études en sciences sociales (Mondes Américains). From August to December 2025, he hed a visiting position at the Centro de Estudos da Metrópole (Universade de São Paulo and CEBRAP) in São Paulo, Brazil.
From 2022 to 2025, he worked as Researcher at the Institute for Comparative Federalism of Eurac Research, studying participatory budgeting in Italy, on local-level democratic innovations in the Alpine region, and territorial autonomy in Italy and France, with a special focus on Corsica.
