Matteo Lai

PhD student of the interdepartmental doctoral course in “Health and Technology” at the Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering “Guglielmo Marconi” of the University of Bologna, member of the AI for Medicine Research Group.

He received the Master's Degree in Biomedical Engineering with Honors in 2022 at the University of Bologna with a thesis carried out at the University of Essex (Colchester, UK), he was research fellowship for a project managed by Telethon and funded by AISA (Associazione Italiana Sindromi Atassiche).

His main research interests focus on the application of artificial intelligence techniques in the medical field, with particular emphasis on medical imaging and neuroimaging data. His work leverages generative models, including generative adversarial networks (GANs) and diffusion models, to address challenges related to limited data availability and privacy constraints, while placing strong emphasis on the quantitative and qualitative evaluation of synthetic data quality to ensure reliability, and meaningful applicability in medical research contexts.
