Curriculum vitae

Marina Barbiroli received her Laurea degree in Electronic Engineering at the University of Bologna in 1995 and she received the PhD degree in Computer Science and Electronic Engineering at the University of Bologna in 2000. Currently she is Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi", University of Bologna.

The research activity mainly concerns the study of electromagnetic field prediction models and planning criteria for radiocommunication systems: outdoor and indoor wireless propagation for 5G systems, deterministic and hybrid channel model, Ray-Tracing models, MIMO channel modelling, diffuse scattering models, energy efficiency evaluation for mobile systems. Moreover, electromagnetic field prediction models are used for evaluation of field strength levels near transmitting antennas for compliance checking with exposure levels and for the analysis of coexistence of different systems operating in the same band or in adjacent bands (study of the applicability of the principle of service neutrality and technological neutrality in terms of performance evaluation): e.g. LTE vs. DVB-T, GSM vs UMTS, WiMAX vs DVB-T. The research also includes the study of the suitable architectures for smart metering and smart grid, considering the influence of electromagnetic propagation on networks performance, as well as evaluation of energy efficiency with respect to different architectures of mobile radio systems.

Research activity includes participation in international and national programs of cooperation and research (COST 259, COST 273 COST2100, COST IC1004, COST IRACON, FP6 Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunication NEWCOM, FP7 Network of Excellence in Wireless COMmunication NEWCOM++, FP7 - Architectures for fLexible Photonic Home and Access networks ALPHA, MIUR/CNR-ENEA National Project “Salvaguardia dell’uomo e dell’ambiente dalle emissioni elettromagnetiche (Protection of humans and environment from electromagnetic fields)”, PRIN08 National Project on “MULTI-TAG: Tecnologie elettromagnetiche per RFID attivi e passivi ad interrogazione multipla (Electromagnetic techniques for passive and active RFID for multiple queries), PRIN2015 “WiNOT – Wireless Networks through on-chip Optical Technology”, aimed at investigating methodologies for wireless connections at optical frequencies for on-chip communications, PRIN-2017 “WPT4WID: Wireless Power Transfer for Wearable and Implantable Devices”, aimed at studying and developing solutions providing wireless energy transfer to implanted or wearable medical devices, with particular attention to the complex millimeter wave band).

She is involved in several collaboration with international Universities: Aalto University of Helsinki (Finland), Tongji University of Shanghai (China), Universitée Catholique Lovain (Belgium), Ilmenau University of Technology (Germany), Technische Universität Braunschweig (Germany) and with companies: Huawei (Shanghai, China), Vodafone (Italy), Wind (Italy), Polaris Wireless Inc. (CA, USA).
