I am a Tenure-Track Researcher (RTT) in applied and environmental hydrogeology at the Department of Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences of the University of Bologna, where I carry out research, teaching, and technology transfer activities in hydrogeological modelling, sustainable groundwater resource management, and the study of aquifer contamination. I completed my entire academic training at the University of Bologna, where I obtained my Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in geology and my PhD in Earth Sciences, with a dissertation focused on the migration, partitioning, and degradation of chlorinated hydrocarbons in unconsolidated porous aquifers.
My scientific activity mainly focuses on porous, fractured, and karst aquifers, with particular attention to aquifer recharge, groundwater vulnerability, the effects of climate change on water resources, and the characterization of sites contaminated by chlorinated solvents and other natural or anthropogenic contaminants. I have taken part in national and international research projects, including the European GENESIS project, and I have held leadership roles in competitive projects, such as the PRIN 2022 AMBRA project and the Alma Idea SOCIE-IT project.
Alongside competitive research, I have gained significant experience in commissioned research and technology transfer, collaborating with public bodies, river basin authorities, environmental agencies, and companies. These activities have addressed, among other topics, district-scale hydrogeological modelling, the hydrodynamic and hydrochemical characterization of aquifers, hydrogeological thematic mapping, the optimization of groundwater abstraction, and the assessment of water resource contamination.
In terms of teaching, I have carried out continuous teaching activities in Master’s degree programmes at the University of Bologna, particularly in numerical modelling of flow and transport in porous hydrogeological systems and in applied and environmental hydrogeology. I have also contributed to field-based teaching laboratories, tutoring activities, and specialist training courses, including for external institutions, and I have supervised or co-supervised several Master’s and PhD theses.
My scientific output includes 30 publications in international peer-reviewed journals, with a leading role—first author, corresponding author, or last author—in half of them. My work addresses topics such as groundwater contamination, environmental and isotopic tracers, aquifer recharge, mountain springs, hydrogeological vulnerability, phytoscreening, and the resilience of water resources to climate change. I am also the author or co-author of more than 50 presentations at national and international conferences and invited seminars.
I have carried out research stays abroad at the University of Guelph in Canada and at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research in Germany, strengthening international scientific collaborations in the fields of groundwater contamination and isotopic analyses.
Finally, I contribute to the scientific community through editorial activities, peer review for international journals, the organization of scientific events, and participation in committees and professional networks. I am Associate Editor of Journal of Hydrology – Regional Studies, a member of the Topical Advisory Panel of Water, and I was a member of the Italian committee of the Early Career Hydrogeologists Network of the International Association of Hydrogeologists.
