Short Bio

Senior assistant professor (fixed-term) of History of Medieval and Modern Law, Lorenzo Maniscalco teaches European Legal History and Ius commune & Common Law at the Department of Legal Studies of the University of Bologna. In the past he has also taught courses in criminal biolaw (biodiritto penale) and in the history of modern codifications. He holds a PhD in Legal History from the University of Cambridge. Before joining Bologna in 2023, he was a Lecturer and Fellow in Law at Clare College, University of Cambridge, where he taught civil law and legal history.

His research examines the relationship between legal doctrine, intellectual culture and social practices in medieval and early modern Europe. He has written on equity and legal interpretation, with particular attention to the interaction between civil, canon and common law and to the reception of Aristotelian philosophy, as well as on euthanasic practices and cultures of death in early modern England. He is currently developing a long-term project on polygyny in late medieval and early modern Europe.
