In 2010, he was visiting researcher in the Vibration and Wave Propagation Lab at Georgia Institute of Technology (USA), working on the development of analysis methods for guided wave propagation.

Thesis title: “Design of a digital integrated circuit to process the signal acquired by pressure sensors”. Supervisor: Prof. Guido Masetti. This work was carried out at the Berlin Polytechnic University (TU Berlin, Germany), supported by a scholarship granted by the University of Bologna.

PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL and INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH PROJECTS
Principal Investigator in the international project “SUstainable fiSHeries wIth DROnes data Processing – SUSHI DROP”. Project budget 1.700.000 €, Interreg CBC Italy-Croatia framework: Environment and Cultural Heritage. Starting date 1/1/2019.
Local coordinator in “GW4SHM Guided Waves for Structural Health Monitoring” (Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions, Innovative Training Networks H2020-MSCA-ITN-2019). Local budget: 260.000€, starting date 1/1/2020.
Local coordinator and Work package leader in the project MAC4PRO (“Smart maintenance of industrial plants and civil structures via innovative monitoring technologies and prognostic approaches”) funded by INAIL BRIC 2018. Local budget: 115.000€.

Finally, he is currently leading/ has led several research projects sponsored by industrial partners (Dallara Automobili S.p.A, Eni S.p.A., RFI S.p.A., HPE-COXA, REIA srl) on the development of intelligent sensor systems.

AWARDS, PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES AND MEMBERSHIPS
Recipient of the “Proof of Concept” grant awarded by the University of Bologna for the development of the sensor technology described in patent WO 2016/166722.
First author of the paper “A pulse coding and decoding strategy to perform Lamb wave inspections using simultaneously multiple actuators” (Mechanical Systems and signal processing) awarded by the Polish Academy of Science IMP as 2017 High Impact Publication.
Co-author of the paper “Heterogeneous Sensor-network for Vibration-based SHM", recipient of the "Best paper award (young authors) at the IEEE Measurement and Networking Symposium (IEEE M&N 2019).
Co-author of the paper "Automatic wavelet localization and adaptive meshing of physical relevances in device simulation", recipient of the "Gold Leaf Certificate" at the IEEE International Conference on Ph.D. Research Conference In Electronics and Microelectronics (PRIME 2005).
Co-author of the project “Intelligent Structures” recipient of the 1st Prize at the National Finals of the “Clean Launchpad 2014” competition organized by the Climate-KIC partnership (www.climate-kic.org). The same project was awarded the “Menzione d’onore” (Honorable Mention) by the Italian Association of Engineers.
He earned the Italian Professional Engineering certification since 2002.
He earned the National Academic Qualification as Associate Professor in Electronics since 2014.

CONFERENCES ORGANIZED, JOURNAL EDITORIAL BOARD SERVICE
In 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 he was Program Committee Member for the International Congress on Image and Signal Processing, an annually held meeting sponsored by the IEEE society.
Since 2014, he is Program Committee Member for the International Conference on “Applications in Electronics Pervading Industry, Environment and Society”.
He was Session Chair at the International Congress on Ultrasonics 2011, at the European Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring 2016 and he chaired the Special Session on “Acquisition and Processing Techniques for Industrial Nondestructive Evaluation“ at the IEEE ISCAS 2018 congress, and the “Intelligent sensors technologies for Structural health monitoring”, IEEE Measurement & Networking 2019 Workshop.
He is member of the Editorial board of Sensors, MDPI (IF 2020: 3.510).

RESEARCH ACTIVITY
Prof. De Marchi has published more than 150 papers on international journals or on proceedings of international conferences (h-index 23, source: Scopus).
The current research of Prof. De Marchi strives to develop intelligent sensor system in different application fields. This is accomplished by combining his background in Electronics with heterogeneous technologies pertaining to Acoustics and Ultrasonics, Micro-Electro-Mechanical-Systems, Signal Processing, and Sensor Networks. In pursuing such multidisciplinary research goals, Dr. De Marchi has developed a network of collaborations with scientists within the University of Bologna (Civil and Material Engineering Dept), in major institutions in Italy (e.g. University of Florence; National Research Council–CNR), and abroad (e.g. Georgia Institute of Technology, the University of Pittsburgh; Fudan University Shanghai; University of Leeds, University of Lyon, KU Leuven, University of Sherbrooke, Polish Academy of Sciences). He is currently supervising 4 PhD students and 4 research fellows.
