Hani El Debuch

Hani El Debuch's research focuses on political anthropology, the militarisation of society and transitional justice. His work examines the rites of passage and the forms of obedience in military conscription among Syrians in Damascus and in the diaspora.


His current research aims at distinguishing between loyalty to the homeland and obedience to a repressive political system within military conscription. His focus on the transitional period in Syria represents one of the first studies of military service since the fall of the Assad regime.
