Born in Bologna in 1957, he graduated in Chemistry in July 1980 from the Department of Chemistry "G. Ciamician".
From 1981 to 1992 he was a researcher at the National Research Council, Bologna.
In 1984 and 1987 he was a visiting researcher at the Food Research Institute, Norwich (UK) and the US Department of Agriculture, Beltsville (MD, USA), respectively.
Since 1992 he has been an associate professor, first at the University of Reggio Calabria, and since 1996 at the Alma Mater Studiorum.
In 2002 he co-founded Analytical Research Systems Srl (spin-off of the University of Bologna).
He has always been interested in chromatography and mass spectrometry with agri-food and environmental applications, including the creation of a commercial Membrane Introduction Mass Spectrometer (MIMS) for the remote and unmanned monitoring of organohalogen compounds in water and air.
He has published 143 papers in international journals.
He is supervisor of 75 bachelor's, specialization, and doctoral theses.
