Short Bio

As a second-year Ph.D. candidate in Historical Science and Archaeology at the University of Bologna. I graduated in Modern and Social History from the same university.

My research interests are centered around Modern History, particularly in the field of Mediterranean studies. Specifically, I am delving into the Corsair War and slavery in early modern Apulia and examining how these phenomena evolved over time.

By examining notarial sources, I aim to substantiate the existence of an Adriatic-Balkanic slave trade that linked Apulia with Croatia-Dalmatia during the 17th and 18th centuries. This involves analyzing the demographics of slaves and reconstructing the routes taken by merchants. I am constructing a comprehensive database and map detailing all available information about the slaves in Apulia, including their identification data. This effort aims to illustrate and comprehend the workings of the trade, its origins, the origins of the enslaved individuals, and the circumstances under which they became slaves—whether through pirates, corsairs or as war captives.
