Curriculum vitae

Gino Malacarne was born in Portomaggiore, Ferrara in 1955. He studied architecture at IUAV-Istituto Universitario di Architettura di Venezia and received his degree under the guidance of Aldo Rossi in 1981. Since then he has taught design studios and seminars at IUAV until 2004. He has been a member of the Board of the PhD in Architectural Composition of the DPA at the University IUAV of Venice until 2007. He has taught at the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Trieste. Professor of architectur and urban design since 2004 at the Faculty of Architecture “Aldo Rossi” University of Bologna, he became Dean of the Faculty in 2005 and since 2012 has been a member of the board of the PhD program in Architectural Composition of the Faculty. From 2012 to 2015 he has been Coordinator of the Master in Architecture and Vice President of the School of Engineering and Architecture of the University of Bologna.

Involved with research in architectural composition, Malacarne has conducted various studies on theatre design and civic architecture. He has published projects and essays in national and international journals and take part in conferences. He has participated in urban requalification for some public administrations with architectural projects and realizations of urban public spaces and public residential buildings. Malacarne has taught in national and international design seminars and participated in numerous international design competitions.

He has participated in collective exhibitions of architectural projects including: III Mostra Internazionale di Architettura Biennale of Venezia; Progetto Venezia (1985) and V Mostra Internazionale di Architettura Biennale of Venezia (1991), Triennale of Milano, Il centro altrove (1995), “Nuova Architettura Italiana”, held at Heimat Museum Charlottemburg of Berlin,1996, then in other German University, in Buenos Aires and Melbourne; “Incontri sulla giovane architettura europea”, Siviglia 1996, Porto 1999, Biennale di Cracovia 2000; “Next school new entrances”, in Next, 8. Mostra Internazionale of Architettura, La Biennale di Venezia, 2002; “Città di Pietra”, 10. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura, La Biennale of Venezia 2006; “ARCHITETTI ITALIANI A CONFRONTO”, Aula Mostre Campus Bovisa, Facoltà di Architettura Civile, Politecnico of Milano, then in Venezia, Vicenza, Ravenna and Bari; “Nuova architettura razionale”, Palazzo della Gran Guardia, Padova 2102 and Univerity Iuav of Venezia 2012.

Among the major projects: Ideas competition for “Parco la Favorita” in Mirandola, Modena 1987 (awarded project); “Stazione ferroviaria per S. Pietro in Casale”, Bologna 1989; International competition “Un museo di architettura per Parma” 1989 (awarded project); Design for “Westhafen” in Duisburg 1990; Apartment in a Peep's area in S. Pietro in Casale, Bologna 1991-95; Project for the south area of Cracow, International Design Seminar 2000; Competition “Progetto per i nuovi uffici Alcoa Italia S.p.A.” in Bolzano (with Rebus Workshop, Padova), first prize awarded 2000-2001; Competition “Feltria Urbs” (con L. Semerani, A. Dal Fabbro, A. Gallo, E. Mantese, G. Marras) Feltre (Belluno) 2002, first prize awarded; International competition “Piazza della Libertà”, Cesena 2003, first prize awarded; Project of recovery and restorationof the fort“Forte San Biagio – Werk Colle delle Benne” in Levico (Trento) 2004-2008; “Modena Città Media Felix. Progetto di riqualificazione urbana per il Villaggio Artigiano e il quartiere Madonnina” first and second phase, Modena 2005-2008; Project for two residential blocks in south Verona, PRUSST Verona sud, 2007; Executive design for Piazza della libertà, Cesena 2011.

He edited the book "Progetti veneziani", Milano 1985; he has curated the exhibition and the catalog "Jože Plečnik, lo spazio urbano a Lubiana", Treviso 1996. He edited the "Aldo Rossi e Venezia, il teatro e la città", Milano 2002. He published " Die Stadt und die Türme. Le città e le torri" in the book: Die Idee der Stadt/L'idea della città. I/II/III, Tübingen-Berlin, Ernst Wasmuth Verlag 2009. He is the author of the book " Progetto Fo-Ce, città lineare Forlì Cesena", Bologna 2012. He edited the publication "La Casa. Forme e luoghi dell'abitare urbano", Milano 2013.
