Professional assignments

Contract as a Physician in the Nephrology, Dialysis and Renal Transplant Unit, St Orsola Hospital in Bologna since November 10th 1999

Designation by an internal selection procedure of a management position (“posizione professionale ex-C- Alta Professionalità”) in the Unit of Nephrology, Dialysis and Renal Transplant for the period January 1st, 2008-December 31st, 2011.

Nominated as Head of  the pre-transplant  phase, December 1st, 2012.


Clinical knowledge and abilities

Primitive glomerulonephritis, systemic diseases with renal impairment (Connectivitis, Diabetes, vasculitis). Nosographic framework of glomerular diseases through interpretation of renal biopsy. Pharmacological treatment of primary and secondary renal diseases and clinical monitoring of nephropatic patients.

Hereditary kidney diseases. Management of patients with cystic kidney disease, kidney malformations, Alport syndrome, Fabry disease. Genetic investigations on patients and their family members.

Chronic renal dysfunction. Monitoring of patients with CKD at different stages. Early treatment of major complications secondary to chronic renal failure: high blood pressure, fluid and electrolyte balance, acid-based balance disorders, anemia, disorders of mineral metabolism (CKD-MBD), neurological disorders (restless legs syndrome), metabolic disorders (metabolic syndrome, dyslipidemia).

Management of patients on hemodialysis with both intermittent and continuous techniques. Dealing with clinical, metabolic and therapeutic problems concerning chronic dialysis patients.

Managing of dialysis patient complications. Monitoring vascular access. Dealing with fistula and central venous catheter complications and their management (thrombosis, infection). Management of intradialytic complications (hypotension, arrhythmias, disequilibrium syndrome).

Complications of kidney transplant patients. Follow up of transplanted patients and treatment of major immunological complications. Use of therapeutic protocols including suspension of steroid therapy and minimizing the dose of calcineurin inhibitors.

Management of patients with acute kidney injury. Providing information on dialysis in acute patients, the choice of dialysis methods. Jugular and femoral central venous catheterization. Management of hemodialysis complications in the acute patient.

Cardio-renal syndrome. Drug treatment and management of the hydro-saline  balance. Setting up of ultrafiltration treatment through continuous and intermittent hemodialysis.

Author of over 250 scientific publications and numerous other contributions to books, chapters, monographs, abstracts. Speaker at national and international congresses.
