Guglielmo Barone is full professor of Economics at the University of Bologna. Previously, he was associate professor of Economics at the University of Bologna (2020-2023), associate professor of Economic Policy at the University of Padua (2019-2020), and, for a fifteen-year period, economist at the Bank of Italy (2004-2019). He is the person in charge for the societal impact activities of the department. He obtained a Ph.D. in Statistics at the University of Bologna (2004) and was visiting scholar at the NBER (2012). His research interests share a common theme that is the unsatisfying growth of Italian economy in the last 30 years. Against this background, his works empirically focus competition and market functioning, regional divide and place-based policies, political economy, and the functioning of public sector. To do that, he applies current microeconometric techniques for causal analysis. Recently, he worked as consultant for the European Commission, and for a banking foundation. Sometimes, he writes op-ed articles for Il Foglio (previously for Il Riformista).
