Professor of Political Science, University of Bologna (since 2005), Department of Political and Social Sciences, teaching International Politics, Strategic Studies. Chair of the Department (since 2018).

Previously: Visiting Professor at the School of International Studies, University of Trento (2014-2017). Director of the MA program in Diplomatic and International Studies, Faculty of Political Science «Roberto Ruffilli», University of Bologna at Forlì (2006-2012). Associate Professor at the University of Parma (2002-2005), Adjunct Professor at the Bologna Center of the Paul Nitze School of Advanced and International Studies of Johns Hopkins University (2005-2006), and at Bocconi University (2002-2003).
Fellow at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Bruxelles, 1997-1999), the Schumann Centre of the European University Institute (Florence, 1997-1998), the Institute for Security Studies of the Western European Union (Paris 1996), the Center for Strategic and International Studies (Washington, 1992).

Author of four monographs and of more than 80 articles and book chapters in English or Italian. Editor of two volumes. Co-author of a widely adopted textbook on International Relations.

Member of the academic board for political science for the publisher «Il Mulino» (2001-2009 and 2013-) and of the executive committee of the Italian Society of Political Science (since 2014). Previously: Director of the Research Center on International Politics and Conflict Resolution (Cerpic) of the Bruno Kessler Foundation, Trento (2012-2016). Coordinator of the evaluation Panel of the National Research Council on social sciences (2010). Member of the editorial board of the «Rivista Italiana di Scienza Politica» (2003-2006) and «Il Mulino» (2000-2006). Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of the Italian Standing Group on International Relations (2005-2008).

Vice President of the AREL think-tank (since 2007).
