Curriculum vitae

Associate Professor of Chemical Plants at the University of Bologna since 2021, He carries out his research in the field of mainly experimental characterization and modelling of chemical, biochemical and process industry equipment. The research interests are focused in particular towards the characterization of multiphase systems and mixing systems in the presence of non-Newtonian fluids. Fluid dynamics characterization, with techniques such as Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence (PLIF), are strong points of his research. Lately, alternative techniques such as Passive Acoustic have been used to characterize multiphase systems as well.

Born in Piombino in 1985, he is Associate Professor of Chemical Plants since October 2021.

He graduated in Chemical Engineering in 2010 at the University of Pisa discussing the master thesis entitled, "Gas Liquid

Hydrodynamics in Taylor Flows with Complex Liquids" carried out at the University of Pisa and the University of Birmingham (UK).

In 2014, he obtained his PhD in Chemical Engineering discussing the PhD thesis entitled "Blending of Non-Newtonian Fluids in Static Mixers: Assessment Via Optical Methods" carried out at the University of Birmingham (UK) sponsored by Johnson Matthey (JM) company.

For two years he was employed as a researcher, at the University of Birmingham (UK) in the School of Chemical Engineering, within an Innovate UK project, in collaboration with Johnson Matthey (JM) and Unilever. He was, then, hired as Assistant Professor in October 2016.

He currently holds an honorary position at the University of Birmingham in the School of Chemical Engineering, as an Senior Lecturer.

In 2010, he qualified as an Engineer in the “Albo degli ingegneri industriali”.

In 2021, he qualified as a Chartered Engineer in the UK (Chartered Chemical Engineer IChemE).

His research focus on experimental testing of systems and apparatuses of interest to the chemical and process industry. The experimental activity is mainly based on the use of non-intrusive measurement techniques (PIV, PLIF, ERT, PA). On some topics, it has been activated collaborations with colleagues of other Universities and foreign Institutions.

He received the following recognition for scientific activity:

Young Researcher Award 2018 of the Working Party on Mixing of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering.

He is a delegate in the Working Party on Mixing of the European Federation of Chemical Engineering and of the IChemE (UK).

He is member of the scientific committee of several international conferences (ISMIP, European Conference on Mixing, NAMF). He is referee of scientific articles for several journals including: Chemical Engineering Journal, AICHE Journal, Canadian Journal of Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering & Processing, Chemical Engineering Research & Design, Chemical Engineering Science, Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research.

Since 2014, he has participated in several research projects funded by EPSRC and Innovate UK (UK Council) regarding the above research topics and has been coordinator and scientific manager of some privately funded research projects.

He is co-author of more than 50 printed articles in international journals and conference proceedings.
