PhD Student

Department of Physics and Astronomy "Augusto Righi"

Academic discipline: GEO/12 Oceanography and Physics of the Atmosphere

Short Bio

Federica Benassi is a 39th cycle doctoral student in the course “Future Earth, Climate Change and Social Challenges” at the University of Bologna. She received her bachelor's degree in Physics from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and then her master's degree in Earth System Physics at the University of Bologna.

Her research activity focuses on the application of artificial intelligence methods to the study of oceanic, physical and biogeochemical processes on different spatio-temporal scales. She is currently working on the development of wave prediction models based on Graph Neural Networks, designed to operate on unstructured meshes and integrate atmospheric forcings from observational and reanalysis data. She has previously worked on lateral carbon export in coastal regions subject to upwelling, using satellite imagery and unsupervised clustering techniques to identify filamentary structures responsible for offshore matter transport.
