Research fellowship open (deadline 31.05.2024)

Research Fellowship (1+1 year, full time) on the topic “investigation of interactions between circulations at synoptic and local scales”

Description

The research activity will involve the study of the interaction between circulations at synoptic and local scales (such as sea-land breezes and secondary circulations due to the development of the urban heat island) and to identify thermal and physical properties responsible of the development of the urban heat island. To the scope, the candidate will develop high resolution numerical models that, starting from geospatial information on land use, surface parameters and anthropogenic heat emissions, supply information on spatial variability of humidity and temperature fields. In a second phase and after validation of the model outputs, such models will be utilized to evaluate the perturbation introduced by Nature-Based Solutions on the aforementioned fields.

Qualification

Expertise and competence in the area of urban-regional scale simulations and analysis of pollution datasets is required. Knowledge of atmospheric physics processes, convective motion, atmospheric chemistry and pollutant dispersion are an advantage but not considered mandatory. Following are some preferential criteria:

  • Ph.D. degree in topics related to numerical simulations of pollutant dispersion (various fields, e.g. engineering, mathematics, physics, meteorology)

  • Master’degree in relevant disciplines (preferences: Atmospheric Physics, Physics, Engineering, Environmental Science or related fields)

  • Programming skills (e.g. C++, Python, R, MatLab)

  • Knowledge of atmospherics physics, boundary layer and atmospheric chemistry

  • Ability to work in team, meet deadlines, prioritize and organise duties.

  • Good level of written and oral English (at least level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)

Salary and Benefits

The salary is based on the standard levels for Italian university employees adjusted with respect to the level of experience of the candidate. Taxation is variable and depends on the applicant’s tax situation. Gross minimum salary is € 16,000-20.000.

The workplace is the Department of Physics and Astronomy, via Irnerio 46 Bologna, Italy.

Application

The Candidate is expected to be hired in summer 2024 following a formal selection. The pre-selection interviews will end in mid June 2024. If interested, please send:

  1. A curriculum vitae, including a publication list with links to the publishers’ website
  2. A letter of motivation, summarising the Candidate’s interest and qualification for the position, as well as scientific interests and intended research activities.

  3. At least two recommendation letters, and contact information for up to three reference contacts

The application package should be submitted via e-mail to
