Emanuela Marcelli, graduated with honors in Electronic Engineering in 1997 at the University of Ancona, is currently Associate Professor at the School of Medicine (Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences - DIMEC) of the University of University of Bologna (USB),  Scientific Field (SSD) Industrial Bioengineering (ING-IND/34). 

Academic positions and honors

  • From 2002 to 2011: Assistant Professor at DIMES (Experimental, Diagnostic and Specialty Medicine) Department, School of Medicine, University of Bologna - SSD Industrial Bioengineering (ING-IND/34).
  • Since 2012: Associate Professor at DIMES, School of Medicine, University of Bologna - SSD Industrial Bioengineering (ING-IND/34).
  • Since 2011: Director of the Laboratory of Bioengineering at DIMES, School of Medicine, University of Bologna.
  • From 2015 to 2020: Deputy Director of DIMES, School of Medicine, University of Bologna.
  • Since 2019: In charge of eDIMES Lab at DIMEC, School of Medicine, University of Bologna.
  • Since 2020: Delegate for DIMEC to be council member of the Alma Mater Research Center for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence
  • Since 2022: Deputy Coordinator of PhD Course in Surgical Sciences, at School of Medicine, University of Bologna.
  • Since 2022: Scientific Referent for the School of Medicine of Unibo Project “Augmented Alma”

Scientific activities

Research activities of Prof. Emanuela Marcelli are currently mainly focused on on 3D technologies for pre-operative planning, personalized implants, intraoperative guidance and medical education, moreover on artificial organs, medical devices and implantable sensors for cardiac applications. .

Main research topics:

  • Patient-specific 3D modelling and printing for pre-operative planning and design of personalized implants;
  • Simulation, virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) technologies applied to medicine;
  • Sensorized prosthetic heart valves;
  • Implantable sensors for cardiac function monitoring;
  • Technologies for simulation in medical education;
  • Industrial Bioengineering applications in complex health systems.

Other:

  • Since 1999 Member of Focused Fundamental Research (RFO) Project, University of Bologna;
  • Member of National Research Project (PRIN2005);
  • Member of the NIMURRA project (ASI call for ideas "Biotechnology for Human Space Exploration" 2010)
  • Mentoring activity for students of Degree Course in Engineering (17 thesis);
  • From 2003 to 2011 Member of the Professors Committee of the PhD Course in Electromagnetism and Bioengineering (Marche Polytechnic University);
  • Member of the Editorial Board of the scientific journal “Hospital & Public Health”;
  • Coordinator of the working group in “Emerging Technologies” of the Biomedical Technology Division of  “Accademia Nazionale di Medicina”;
  • Member of the Scientific Board of the S.I.S.B.E. “Società Italiana per lo Studio delle Biotecnologie e delle Tecnologie Biomediche, dell'Ingegneria Ospedaliera e dell'Edilizia Sanitaria”.

Emanuela Marcelli is author/co-author of more than 100 publications and abstracts.

Emanuela Marcelli is co-inventor of 8 USA patents, 6 European patents and 19 Italian patents.
