EXPERTISE AND RESEARCH INTERESTS
My research focuses on urban and territorial archaeology in the Roman and Late Antique periods, with particular attention to the dynamics of interaction between cities and landscapes and to settlement transformations in relation to environmental, infrastructural and cultural changes.
Urban and landscape archaeology
Study of the transformation of urban quarters in the Roman and Late Antique periods, with particular reference to public and private architecture, hydraulic infrastructures and the relationship between humans and the environment (rivers, coastlines, springs). The analysis includes Roman and Late Antique architecture, with specific attention to mosaic pavements, and integrates archaeological data, topographical analysis and historical sources.
Late Antique rural settlements
Research on rural settlement patterns in Northern Italy between the 3rd and 7th centuries AD, with a focus on vici, villas and secondary agglomerations in relation to urban centres (Milan, Ravenna). This research strand, developed during the PhD project, addresses the settlement, economic and religious dynamics of rural areas, including processes of Christianisation and adaptation to the morphology of the ancient landscape, through the use of GIS and spatial analysis.
Harbour and coastal archaeology
Studies and excavation activities focused on port, fluvial and coastal systems in the Roman and Late Antique periods, aimed at reconstructing routes and connections between cities, infrastructures and territories, with particular reference to the areas of Ostia, Ravenna and Mediolanum. In this field as well, spatial analysis and the use of GIS constitute core methodological tools.
Materials and material culture
Analysis of ancient architecture and archaeological materials, with particular attention to Roman and Late Antique mosaics. Some research contributions are dedicated to the study of tableware and transport amphorae as indicators of economic practices and settlement dynamics.
Archaeological museology and heritage valorisation
Research and museum design activities developed during a research fellowship in Archaeological Museology (University of Bologna), with experience in exhibition curation, museum education and student training. This field is conceived as an integral part of the process of interpretation, management and dissemination of archaeological data.
