    • Study of some phospholipids action on the regulation of the DNA double helix opening when DNA is linked to nucleo-histone complexes.
  • 1977 – 1991    At the Institute of Human Physiology of Bologna (Prof. P.L. Parmeggiani):
    • Electrophysiological mechanisms in the interaction between sleep and thermoregulation, in the “chronic” cat.
  • 1987 – 1991    At the Institute of Human Physiology of Parma (Proff. G. Rizzolatti, L. Bon, A. Caretta, A. Cavaggioni, M. Gentilucci, M. Matelli, C. Umiltà):
    • Electrophysiological study of the visuo-motor functions in the premotor areas of the conditioned monkey (Prof. G. Rizzolatti and Prof. M. Matelli).

  • 2004 – Now     At the Neuroradiology Operative Unit of Bellaria Hospital, Bologna (Prof. M. Leonardi, Dott. R. Agati):
    • Impact of the new investigative potentialities of the 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance (MR) systems in the diagnosis of the cerebral tumours.
    • Application of the new 3 Tesla MR dynamic acquisition techniques in the diagnosis of pituitary microadenomas.
    • New diagnostic possibilities of the 3 Tesla MR systems on the human spinal cord.
    • Study of spinal dural fistulae by means of 3 Tesla magnetic resonance angiography.
    • The dementia neuroimages in CT.
    • The use of MR 3 Tesla activation paradigms in the presurgical planning of the cerebral tumours.
    • Application of 3 Tesla MR tractography and activation studies in the diagnostic and presurgical evaluation of the cerebral tumours.
    • The study of the eloquent areas induced by specific (neutral and epileptogenic) music, in the musicogenic epilepsy.
    • Analysis of the functional activations induced, in 3 Tesla MR, by different (negative, neutral and positive) emotional visual stimulations in the amygdala, in the anterior cingulate cortex and in the medial prefrontal cortex, in patients suffering from mild ulcerative colitis in remission.
    • Study of patients suffering from “Panic disease”, by means of MR 3 Tesla: analysis of the functional activations induced in the amygdala by different visual projections of “fearful faces”, showed both as masked subliminar and as low frequency stimuli.
    • Reliability of functional activation studies in 3 Tesla MR: comparison between the eloquent areas induced by motor paradigms and motor areas defined by intraoperative direct electrocorticostimulation.

ELETTROPHYSIOLOGY

Surgical techniques of preparation of the “acute” and “chronic” laboratory animal (rat, cat and monkey). Monkey conditioning technique. Polygraphic recording of physiologic bioelectric variables (EEG, PGO, EKG, etc.). Neuronal unit activity extracellular recording. Electrical stimulation of nervous structures. Ocular movement recording by magnetic search-coil method.

 

BIOCHEMISTRY

Protein separation and identification (column separation, gel electrophoresis). Conjugation of proteins with colloidal gold. Computerized analysis of samples (plates, filters, gels) which could be radioactive (fosfoimager) or not (quantitative densitometry).

 

NEUROANATOMY

Intravenous injection and stereotactic microinjection into the cengtral nervous system of substances (markers, toxins, etc.). Cutting of biological samples at the freezing microtome and cryostat. Localization of marking substances (fluorescents), in unfixed central nervous system samples (polarized light optical microscopy). Direct detection of colloidal gold presence ( by silver enhancement), in fixed central nervous system samples. Immunohistochemistry. In situ hibridation. X-Y plotting of marked areas. Semiquantitative computerized analysis of images  acquired by optical microscope by mean of a telecamera.

 

INFORMATICS

In possess of the European Computer Driving License (ECDL Core Level), which certify the current use of: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Electronic mail and Internet (search engines). Current use of software for graphics (Corel Draw), digital image editing (Photoshop) and professional typographical paging layout (FreeHand). Current use of digital cameras and scanners for  image acquisition, current use of software for the OCR character conversion (Omnipage, Abby Fine Reader). Current use of software for the management of web pages and links in internet websites (DreamWeaver). Some programming elements in HTML. Personalized programming (in VB6) specifically aimed at the statistical and graphic data processing of data-bases archives (e.g. Kaplan-Meyer survival curves and computation of the respective Log-Rank test, and the correlative graphics). Preparation of posters, professional playbills and computerized presentations for congresses and lessons. Bibliographic researches on-line. Planning and implementation of personalized Databases for the management of data archives (scientific, clinic-epidemiologic, bibliographic, etc.).

 

NEURORADIOLOGY

Acquisition, reconstruction and analysis of data acquired on 3 Tesla Magnetic Resonance systems, by the use of dedicated software as: Functool (GE Medical Systems) for thr processing of Diffusion, Perfusion, Tractography and functional Activation, Sage and LCModel, for the data processing in Spectroscopy. Current use of advanced dedicated software (BrainWave, BrainVoyager) for the tridimensional reconstruction, the location and the analysis of the eloquent areas (mono e multisubject) in fMRI. Activation paradigm implementation.
