Academic discipline: BIO/10 Biochemistry

Curriculum vitae

Dr. Cristiana Caliceti was born in Bologna (Italy). In 2007 she graduated in Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Technologies at the University of Bologna and in 2011 she obtained the PhD degree in Biochemistry. Part of her research activity was conducted at the Department of Pharmacology of University of Illinois at Chicago (Chicago, Illinois, US) as visiting PhD student in the lab of Prof. Masuko Ushio-Fukai.

She won several post-doc fellows at the University of Ferrara, in the Department of Medical Sciences in the field of cardiovascular system, estrogens, Notch signalling and redox signalling. In September 2015 she became junior researcher in BioAnalytical Chemistry (Department of Chemistry “Giacomo Ciamician”, University of Bologna). In october 2019 she became senior researcher of Biochemistry ( Dept. of Biomedical and Neuromotor Sciences, University of Bologna). Part of her scientific activity involves the study of redox signalling and Notch pathway in cardiovascular system and solid tumors. Moreover, she is interested in the cellular and molecular activities of bioactive molecules and nutraceuticals to prevent high socially relevant diseases and to develop bioanalytical methods based on bio-chemiluminescence detection with applications in drug screening and diagnostics.

Author of 45 papers on referred journals in the fields of General Biochemistry, Applied Biochemistry and Bioanalytical Chemistry and more than 50 oral and poster presentations in national and international congresses. She won several awards of Italian Society of Biochemistry (SIB) and Federation of European Biochemical Societies (FEBS).

Strong background in molecular biology, cell cultures, spectroscopic techniques (spectrophotometry, fluorimetry and bio-chemiluminescence), microscopy, ELISA assays, electrophoresis and western blotting, radioisotopic techniques, gene silencing and overexpression, PCR and qReal Time-PCR, isolation and disassembly of caveolae / lipid raft, animal model experiments. Part of the experimental work is carrying out at "Centro Unificato di Ricerca Biomedica applicata (CRBA)" at Sant'Orsola Malpighi Hospital.

Currently she is Prinicpal Investigator in "Ricerca medica traslazionale e clinica 2022 - Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna" grant, with a project titled "Early detection of Colon Cancer: 'gut microbiota - bile acids - Notch signalling' interactive axis".

She is also associate investigator in:

  • Italian Space Agency (ASI) 2023 grant, titled "Biosensore multiparametrico per il monitoraggio di marcatori salivari di danno cardiaco in corso di volo umano spaziale GRAVICUORE".
  • MIUR PRIN 2022 funded by the Ministero Della Salute (Italy) titled "BIO-WASTE PRODUCTS AS A SOURCE OF NUTRACEUTICALS TO TARGET THE COMMON TRAIT OF INFLAMMATION IN CANCER AND NEURODEGENERATION".
  • Italian Association of Cancer Research (AIRC) 2020-2025 grant titled “Cancer risk in hookah smokers”.

She participates in several funded national and international projects:

- Associate Investigator in the Union Horizon 2020 Work programme, European Proteomics Infrastructure Consortium-Providing Access (EPIC-XS) grant titled “Multi-omics signature of endothelial dysfunction to predict mortality in COVID-19 patients”

-  Principal Investigator in "Ricerca medica traslazionale e clinica 2020 -  Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Bologna" grant, with a project titled "Study of highly predictive biomarkers for assessing the occurrence of colon-rectal cancer"
