Jakoba van Tonder

Dr. Cobi van Tonder is a practice-led researcher and interdisciplinary artist.

Cobi van Tonder creates drone music with instrumental recordings, field recordings and processed sound, focusing on microtonal tunings, difference tones and beating patterns (Vertical Time, Gala and Mutation II), virtual acoustics (Echoes and Reflections, Goodbye Anthill) and audio/sensory hybrid experiences with infrasound (Delta Bioresonance Variations, Half wave 1,5 Hz). She created the virtual listening space AcousticAtlas.de and works as a researcher in acoustics at the Department of Architecture, Bologna University, specializing in heritage acoustics. She holds a PhD from Trinity College Dublin, an MFA from Stanford, and a BHons in Musicology from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg.

She has been the Organising Chair for I3DA2023 & I3DA2025 and is currently co-creating I3DA2026.
