After earning a degree in modern history from the University of Bologna and a PhD in history of science and medicine from Yale University (2021), Barbara Di Gennaro Splendore was research fellow at the University of Bucharest Research Institute (2022–2023) and the Consiglio per la Ricerca in Agricoltura CREA (2024–2025).
Her first book, The State Drug: Theriac Pharmacy and Politics in Early Modern Italy (Harvard University Press, 2025), explores the centuries-old entanglement of power and pharmacy through the early modern history of theriac, an ancient remedy. She has published in several journals, including Nuncius, Annals of Science and the British Journal for the History of Science.
Her scholarship has been recognized with the Reinerman Prize from the Society for Italian Historical Studies (2023) and the Trevor Levere Prize from Annals of Science (best article, 2015).
