Thesis project on the dynamics of multi-stable morphing structures

In recent years, the perception of large deformations in structures has drastically evolved: previously seen as a nuisance or even dangerous, these deformation regimes are recently being exploited to create structures with unprecedented functionalities. The goal of this project is to take steps towards the realization of multi-stable structures that can snap into desired, and reversible equilibrium shapes due to vibratory inputs. The participant, closely co-advised by Prof. Antonio Palermo at UNIBO and Prof. Paolo Celli at Stony Brook University, will be initially brought up to speed on those fundamentals of nonlinear dynamics needed to tackle such a problem, which also relies on advanced structural mechanics concepts. The project will then involve a balanced mix of modeling (analytical and/or numerical), fabrication of tabletop-scale structural prototypes, and experiments.
