Large scale superconducting devices and systems are
investigated. In particular the following applications are
considered
- Energy storage ( SMES )
- Limitation of fault current ( SFCL )
- DC transmission and distribution of electricity
- Magnetic levitation , generation of magnetic fields and use
machines
Among available superconductors both magnesium diboride ( MgB2 )
and materials with high critical temperature (HTS ) are
considered.
Numerical models able to cope with the high non linearity of
these materials are also developed for the design and the
optimization of practical devices.
Devices of industrial interest for the electromagnetic
processing of material are also investigated. These include high
efficiency induction heaters (both for aluminum and steel) and
electromagnetic filters for the removal of micropollutants from
liquids and fine particulate from atmosphere.
The research activities are carried out in collaboration with
several industries and research organizations.
