Alessio Costarelli is a PhD in Art History (2021) and at the moment he is Assistant Professor of Contemporary Art History at the University of Messina. His studies focus on 19th century Italian and European sculpture, with special attention to Neoclassicism and Romanticism and to the life and works of Antonio Canova. He has published two books (Democrito Gandolfi, 2020; Canova e gli Inglesi, 2022), many articles and essays in important scientific magazines and volumes. He has also edited a recollection of interdisciplinary studies (Iustitia et Pax Osculatae Sunt, 2018) and an exhibition at the Pinacoteca Nazionale di Bologna (Canova e Bologna. Alle origini della Pinacoteca, 2021). In 2023 he attempted at the first study on the sculpture collection of the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna and in 2025 he becomes one of the editors of the national edition of Antonio Canova's epistolary. Since 2024, he is co-curator together with Isabella Valente (Università "Federico II" di Napoli) of the annual international meeting "Dialoghi sulla scultura italiana dell'Ottocento e del Novecento".
