Alessandro Talamelli was born in Fabriano (AN), Italy, in 1965. In 1990 he received the Engineer degree (cum laude) in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Pisa. In 1994 he received the Ph.D in Aerospace Engineering at the Politecnico of Milano.
After 1 year as a Post-Doc at the University of Pisa in 1995 he became Assistant Professor in Fluid Dynamics at the Department of Aerospace Engineering of the same University. In 2001 he moved as Associate Professor to the University of Bologna where in 2016 he became Full Professor of Aerodynamics. Since 2013 he is Director of the Interdepartmental Centre for Industrial Research in Aeronautics.
His research interests concern aerodynamics, fluid mechanics and measurement techniques. His main research areas include: development and application of new measurement techniques, analysis of turbulent and transitional flows in open and close environments. More recently he focused his activity on the study and development of new methodologies for transition control and friction drag reduction.
Since 2001, he has been responsible of the Applied Aerodynamics Laboratory of the University of Bologna. In 2005 he becomes chairman of the international laboratory CICLOPE (Centre for International Cooperation in Long Pipe Experiments) in Predappio (see www.ciclope.unibo.it ) where a large international laboratory for the study of high Reynolds number turbulence is installed.
He cooperated with different foreign laboratories: EPFL in Lausanne, University of Houston. Presently he is cooperating with the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm (KTH). He is author of more than 120 papers published in journals and conferences proceedings.
Professor of the aerodynamic courses in the Aerospace Engineering degrees of the University of Bologna and at the University of Modena within the program of the Master in Vehicle Engineering.
From 2003 he is guest professor at KTH, lecturer of the course in Vehicle Aerodynamics (www.mech.kth.se/mech/info_staff.jsp?ID=179 ). Responsible of the curriculum in Design and methods of the Industrial Engineering and Aerospace Sciences of the Doctorate Program in Mechanics and Advanced Engineering Sciences.
Awards and recognitions
Thanks to this activity he has been awarded in 2011 of the XXII Price “Ing. Giuseppe Pedriali” dedicated to researchers that with scientific publication, patents or any type of activity have proved to contribute significantly to the progress of science in the fields of physics, chemistry, and electricity applied to improve the Italian industrial production.
Participation to Editorial Boards and Scientific Committee
Reviewer of the most important journal of the scientific sector. From 2008 he is editor of the Series “Springer-Progress in Turbulence” ISBN 978-3-642-02224-1. From 2016 he is Editor of Experimental Thermal and Fluid Science, Elsevier.
