Department of Electrical, Electronic, and Information Engineering "Guglielmo Marconi"

Academic discipline: ING-IND/32 Power Electronic Converters, Electrical Machines and Drives

Curriculum vitae

Bio

Luca Zarri collaborated with national and international software houses from 1990 to 1992 to code software applications for micro and personal computers. He graduated with honors in Electrical Engineering in 1998 and received a PhD degree from the University of Bologna, Italy, in 2007. From 1999 to 2002, he worked with an Italian engineering company with assignments of design and management of mechanical and electrical plants for large public tenders (with amounts between 1 and 5 million Euros). He held the position of laboratory engineer at the Department of Electrical Engineering of the University of Bologna from 2003 to 2005. Later, he was an assistant professor from 2005 to 2014 and an associate professor from 2014 to 2020. He has been a full professor of power electronics, electric machines, and drives (scientific disciplinary sector ING-IND/32) with the Department of Electrical, Electronic and Information Engineering “G. Marconi” since 2020.

Research activity

Luca Zarri authored more than 170 scientific papers. Most of the papers were presented in well-known international conferences (EPE, EPE-PEMC, IAS, ECCE, CFSP, ISIE, IECON, ICEM, SDEMPED, SPEEDAM, IEMDC, WEMDCD) or published in international scientific journals (IEEE Trans. on Industrial Electronics, IEEE Trans. on Power Electronics and IEEE Trans. on Industry Applications).

The research activity concerns variable-speed electric drives and multi-phase drives, three-phase direct matrix AC / AC converters, multi-level and multi-phase converters, the design of traditional and special electrical machines, diagnostic systems for electrical machines and the design of high-efficiency soft-switching or resonant converters, and wide-band-gap devices.

Projects and contracts

Dr Zarri played an active role as investigator or co-investigator in national research projects and contracts with national private companies, mainly dealing with issues of power electronics and electric drives.

He has participated in various research programs and multi-year projects, including the Research Programs with Relevant National Interest (PRIN) 2005 and 2007, the Research Project of the Ministry of Economic Development “MECCANO” (Industry 2015), the Electrical System Research projects (RdS) 2013-2014 and 2015-2017.

Other activities

L. Zarri has been an IEEE Senior Member since 2012. Since 2016, he has been an officer of the Industrial Drives Committee (IEEE Industry Applications Society). He covered the position of Secretary (2016-2017), Vice Chair-Programs (2018-2019) and Vice Chair–Papers (2020-2021). Currently, he is the Committee Chair. He has repeatedly served as a Session Chair and Topic Chair in international conferences (ECCE, ICEM, IECON, IEMDC). He served as a Vice-Chair for ECCE 2014 (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), ECCE 2018 (Portland, OR) and ECCE 2019 (Baltimore, MD). He was Technical Program Chair for ICEM 2016, SDEMPED 2017, ICEM 2018, IEMDC 2019 and ECCE 2021. He was an Associate Editor of IEEE Trans. on Industry Applications (Electric Machines Committee) from 2014 to 2019. He is currently an Associate Editor for the IEEE Journal of Emerging and Selected Topics in Power Electronics.
