Curriculum vitae

Giulia Favaretto (Venice, 1988) graduated with highest honours in Architecture in 2013, discussing a thesis in Architectural Restoration at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Bologna. Since the same year, she is qualified to practice the profession of Architect and she carried out collaborative activities in teaching at the Architectural Restoration Laboratories at the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna. Since 2015, she held a Doctorate studies scholarship in Architecture at the University of Bologna and she also conducted her research at the Study and Documentation Centre of Villa Tugendhat in Brno and the Bauhaus Foundation in Dessau. In 2019, she received the qualification of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Architecture with a dissertation on "Modernity and Restoration. Materiality and transformation of the rationalist architecture in Forlì in the scenario of the restoration of the 20th century heritage" (ICAR/19). Since 2019, she is an Adjunct Professor and Research Fellow at the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna where, since 2022, is a Junior Assistant Professor.

She is the author of more than 50 scientific publications including volumes and papers on the restoration of the 20th century heritage, on the conservation of the autarchic materials, on the rationalist architecture in Forlì and on the relationship between Modernity and Restoration. Among her publications, the volume "Materiali autarchici. Conservare l'innovazione" (Il Poligrafo 2021). In parallel with these fields of investigation, her research path develops themes connected with microclimate and digitisation, with particular regard to the 20th century architecture.

She is a speaker in national and international conferences, among which DOCOMOMO (Lisbon 2016, Ljubljana 2018, Tokyo 2021, Valencia 2022), CONCRETE (Termoli 2016, Matera 2018), EEHB (Benediktbeuern 2022), GEORES (Milan 2019), REHAB (Braga 2017), SIRA (Rome 2016, Bologna 2018, Genoa 2020, Naples 2023) and AISU (Naples 2017, Bologna 2019, Pavia 2020).

She worked in international design competitions in the field of restoration (among these, the one dedicated to the Feminine Boarding School in Tirana, 2015). Among her collaborations, there are the exhibitions "Le Corbusier. Sette architetture" (IUAV, Venice 2015), "Cesare Valle. Un’altra modernità: architettura in Romagna" (ATRIUM, Forlì 2015) and "Borghi of Italy - #NO(F)EARTHQUAKE" (Side Event of the 16. Mostra Internazionale di Architettura - La Biennale di Venezia. CEA-UniBo-IUAV, Venice 2018). In 2015, she obtained a scholarship at the University of Bologna for a research project finalised to the documentation of Palazzo Borsari in Finale Emilia and, in the same year, she edited the final revision of the "Guidelines for the Restoration of Modern Architecture" (ATRIUM, Forlì 2015). In 2018, she was the candidate of the PhD in Architecture of the University of Bologna at the Three Minute Thesis (3MT). From 2019 to 2021, she has been part of the European project BECK "Integrating education with consumer behaviour relevant to energy efficiency and climate change at the Universities of Russia, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh" (Erasmus+) and, from 2021 to 2023, of the European project 4CH "Competence Centre for the Conservation of Cultural Heritage" (Horizon 2020). Since 2023, she is part of the research project of relevant national interest CHIARA "Cultural Heritage Innovation Adopting Risk Assessment" (PRIN) and of the Global South international cooperation project “Villes Miniéres du Maroc - VDM” (University of Bologna, Department of Architecture and École d'Architecture de Casablanca). She is also a member of the research groups "Rationalist architecture" and "Microclimate analysis and risk assessment for preventive conservation of Historic Buildings" at the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna. Since 2023, she is scientific coordinator of the project "Mappatura, conoscenza e documentazione del patrimonio urbanistico e architettonico del Novecento a Cesena" in collaboration with the Municipality of Cesena and the Archivio di Stato di Forlì-Cesena.

Since 2013, she carries out teaching activities at the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna. She was also an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Engineering and Architecture at the University of Parma (a.y. 2020-2021) and a lecturer at the Professional Master’s Programme 1st Level “MIXR - Master in Innovation in eXtended Reality” (University of Bologna, EON Reality - Worklife Innovation Hub, Bologna, a.y. 2019-2020) and the MOOCs of the BECK project (Erasmus+, a.y. 2021-2022) and RE-VET project (Erasmus+, a.y. 2022-2023). Since 2021, she is a member of the Test ARCHED Commission for the admission to the Single Cycle Degree/Combined Bachelor and Master in Architecture (University of Bologna, Department of Architecture, Campus of Cesena). Since 2023, she is also an academic tutor of curricular internships at the Department of Architecture at the University of Bologna and a member of Degree Commissions (University of Bologna, Department of Architecture, Campus of Cesena, Single Cycle Degree/Combined Bachelor and Master in Architecture). Since 2024, she is also a member of the Orientation Commission of the Single Cycle Degree/Combined Bachelor and Master in Architecture (University of Bologna, Department of Architecture, Campus of Cesena).

Since 2017, she is a member of the Società Italiana per il Restauro dell'Architettura (SIRA), of which she is a component of the Permanent Commissions "Education" and "Relationships with territories", and of the Associazione Italiana di Storia Urbana (AISU). Since 2018 she is also a member of the Italian group of the Centro Internazionale per la Conservazione del Patrimonio Architettonico (CICOP Italia) and of the Committee for Documentation and Conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the Modern Movement (DOCOMOMO Italia).
