Curriculum vitae

Giovanni Mazzanti received his Master Degree in Nuclear Engineering cum laude in 1986 from the University of Bologna. In 1992 he received the PhD in Electrical Engineering and joined the University of Bologna, Department of Electrical Energy Engineering and Information "Guglielmo Marconi" (DEI-Unibo) as Assistant Professor. Since 2004 he is Associate Professor at the School of Engineering and Architecture - University of Bologna, where he teaches “Electrical Technologies & Power Quality” and “High Voltage Engineering and HVDC Technology” (this latter in English).

On November 2020 he became IEEE Fellow, effective 1 January 2021, with the citation "for contributions to high voltage direct current cable systems".

He was tutor or co-tutor of 164 Master Degree or Bachelor Degree Theses in Electrical Engineering. He was supervisor of five PhD Theses in Electrotechnical Engineering. Since October 2018 he has been a member of the QA (Assessment of Quality) Commission of the Degree Course in Electrical Energy Engineering and since 2021 he has been a member of the Study Plan Commission of the Degree Course in Electrical Energy Engineering, being responsible for the master's curriculum in English (Electrical Engineering). Since December 2023 he is a member of the Board of the Department of Electrical Energy Engineering and Information "Guglielmo Marconi" (DEI-Unibo).

In December 2013 he obtained the national qualification as Full Professor in the scientific-disciplinary sector ING-IND/33, "Electrical Systems for Energy" with four "excellent" and one "excellent" ratings; on 5 November 2018 he again obtained the national qualification as Full Professor in the scientific-disciplinary sector ING-IND/33, "Electrical Systems for Energy" with five "excellent" ratings.

Its main fields of research activity are:

1) characterization and aging of electrical insulating materials and systems;

2) diagnostics and reliability of power system components;

3) electromagnetic fields from power systems;

4) power quality;

5) renewable energy sources;

6) HVAC and HVDC transmission cable systems;

7) MV distribution cable systems.

He is author or coauthor of 329 published scientific papers (of which 263 recorded on the Scopus database, with at least 5139 citations and h-index=34, see https://www.scopus.com/authid/detail.uri?authorId=57221541099&origin=AuthorEval), and is coauthor of the book G. Mazzanti, M. Marzinotto, Extruded Cables for High Voltage Direct Current Transmission: Advances in Research and Development, “IEEE Press Series in Power Engineering”, J.Wiley & Sons, 2013, ISBN 978-1-118-09666-6. So far this book has totalized 337 citations on the Scopus database and 611 copies sold worldwide (see http://eu.wiley.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd-1118096665.html ). On this topic he has also chaired and managed the IEEE DEIS Workshop on HVDC Extruded Cable Systems held at the IEEE CEIDP 2016, Toronto, 16th October 2016. He was also Editor of the Jun./Jul. 2017 Special Issue of the IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine (Vol. 33, No. 4, 2017) devoted to this workshop (see https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=7956641 and https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/tocresult.jsp?isnumber=7956621 ).

He is coauthor of 2 contributions to the “Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering” (ed. J. Webster; publ. J. Wiley & Sons, 1999, 2007) and one contribution to the book “Innovations in Power Systems Reliability”, Springer and Verlag, 2011.

Since Jan. 2018 until Jan. 2020 he was Senior Associate Editor (see https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=9047121) and since Feb. 2020 he is co-Editor of the international Journal IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, Part B: Applications (see https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=9047121).

He is also reviewer of the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, IEEE Transactions on Power Delivery, IEEE Electrical Insulation Magazine, IET Generation, Transmission and Distribution, Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, Electric Power System Research (Elsevier), Journal of Applied Physics, Renewable Energy, Physica C: Superconductivity, Journal of Risk and Reliability, and member of the Editorial Board of the international journal Energies (MDPI).

He took part to industrial research projects sponsored by EU and Italian MIUR.

He is consultant of TERNA S.p.A (the Italian TSO), E-Distribuzione S.p.A. (the main Italian DSO), CESI S.p.A. (in this framework, he has contributed to the International Training Course “HVDC Power Cable Technology”, organized by CESI S.p.A. in Mannheim and Heidelberg, Germany, from May 16th to May 20th 2016, giving on the whole 3rd day, May 18th, a lecture entitled “HVDC Cables General Part”).

He was also Scientific Responsible of 6 research agreements/contracts between Terna and DIE/DEI-UNIBO, completed in the years 2010-2023, of a research contract between e-distribuzione S.p.A. and DEI-UNIBO on diagnostic monitoring and reliability analysis of medium voltage (MV) e-distribuzione networks in underground cable, completed in the years 2017-2019, and of a research contract between CESI S.p.A. and DEI-UNIBO on the analysis of possible problems of cable systems in relation to the operation of the transmission network at voltages above 420 kV, completed in the years 2022-2023.

He is Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Member of IEEE DEIS and IEEE PES. He is also chairman of the IEEE DEIS Technical Committee on “HVDC Cable Systems (cables, joints and terminations)” (see TC website https://ieeedeis.org/technical-activities/hvdc-cable-systems-committee/ ) and of the IEEE DEIS Working Group HVDC Cable Systems(cables, joints and terminations), which has developed two IEEE Standards:
1) IEEE 1732-2017, entitled “Recommended Practice for Space Charge Measurements in High Voltage Direct Current Extruded Cables for Rated Voltages up to 550 kV”, issued in June 2017 (see https://standards.ieee.org/standard/1732-2017.html )

2) IEEE 2862-2020, entitled “Recommended Practice for Partial Discharge Measurements under AC Voltage with VHF/UHF Sensors during Routine Tests on Factory and Pre-moulded Joints of HVDC Extruded Cable Systems up to 800 kV”, approved on Dec. 3rd 2020 by IEEE Standard Association Standards Board (IEEE SASB) and published on March 8th 2021 (see https://standards.ieee.org/standard/2862-2020.html).

He is member of the IEEE DEIS Technical Committee on “Smart Grids”. He is also member of the IEEE PES Transmission & Distribution Committee (HVDC & FACTS Subcommittee)

He is member of CIGRE'. Since February 2019 he is member of CIGRÉ Joint Working Group B4/B1/C4.73 on “Surge and extended overvoltage testing of HVDC Cable Systems”. Since 2021 he has been a member of CIGRE' SC B1 and since 2023 he has been a member of CIGRE' WG B1.91 "Transient Thermal Modeling of Power Cables (update to IEC 60853)", which follows the work of CIGRE' TF B1.84 "Update of IEC 60853 (cyclic and emergency current rating of cable) and IEC 62095 (Finite element method - current rating)", of which G. Mazzanti was also a member.

He is member of CEI Technical Committee CT 20 (“Power cables”) and Subcommittee SC20A (“Medium and high voltage cables”).

Since 2022 he has been a member of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Technical Committee 20 (Power cables) Working Group 16 (MV and HV cables).

From 2017 to 2023 he was member of the Board and of the Technical Program Committee of the IEEE International Conference on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation (IEEE CEIDP).

Since October 2023 he has been a member of the International Advisory Committee of the international conference IEEE CATCON 2024.
