2010 – 2014: PhD in Biochemical and Biotechnological Sciences at the Department of Pharmacy and Biotechnology, University of Bologna, Bologna, Italy. Dissertation in: Metagenomic trajectory of gut microbiome in the human lifespan. Defense date: 11/04/2014. Evaluation: Excellent with academic commendation of Doctor Europaeus.

11-12/2016: Visiting Researcher - Leibniz Institute for Prevention Research and Epidemiology - BIPS, Bremen, Germania. Group leaders: Prof. Wolfgang Ahrens e Dr. Kathrin Gunther. Aim of the stay: Metagenomic, bioinformatics and biostatistics analysis of gut microbiome from children with or without obesity.

05-12/2012: Visiting Researcher – Bioinformatic Laboratory, Dept. Microbiology & Alimentary Pharmabiotic Centre, University College Cork, Ireland. Group Leader: Prof. Paul W. O'toole. Aim of the stay: Bioinformatics and machine learning approaches applied to microbiome data of individuals at different age (i.e. from adulthood to extreme ageing).

11/2023 - Today: Principal Investigator for the PRIN PNRR 2022 – InBloom (INterplay Between Lifestyle and blOod micrObiome in colon rectal cancer prevention: a new Metagenomic perspective).

01/2023 – Today: Member of the research team of the University of Bologna for the EU HORIZON EUROPE RIA – TRIBIOME (Advanced tools for integration and synergistic inTeRconnectIon of microBIOMEs in resilient food systems).

11/2018 – Today: Member of the research team of the University of Bologna for the EU H2020-SFS-2018-2020 - Sustainable Food Security project CIRCLES (Controlling microbiomes circulations for better food systems).

08/2019 – 08/2021: Member of the research team of the University of Bologna and responsible of bioinformatics and biostatistics analysis of microbiome data for the PRIN 2018 project “Microbiome-tailored food products based on typical Mediterranean Diet components”.

FELLOSHIPS AND AWARDS

2021: Seal of Excellence holders under Marie-Skłodowska-Curie Actions 2020 for the project METATRACE (H2020-MSCA-IF - Global Fellowship - call 2020). 

2021: most-citable microbiome paper in the Journal "Communications Biology" for the paper "Pre-obese children’s dysbiotic gut microbiome and unhealthy diets may predict the development of obesity" (ref). 

2021: most-accessed microbiome paper in the Journal "Communications Biology" for the paper "Components of a Neanderthal gut microbiome recovered from fecal sediments from El Salt" (ref)

2020: Italian national qualification to be an Associate Professor in Chemistry and Biotechnology of Fermentation (03/D1), Italian Ministry of Education and University (competition notice DD2175/2018).

22/11/2019: Poster prize as best poster for “Enteral nutrition in pediatric patients undergoing hematopoietic SCT promotes recovery of gut microbiome homeostasis“. MIBIOC congress – the way of microbiota in cancer.
