Summary of Lessons 3 & 4 (Triennale in Lingue e letterature straniere)

The following is a summary of the main topics we covered in lessons 3 & 4:

  • Vocabulary focus: compound words (landmark, world-renowned, theatre-goers, sun-soaked, long-standing (has existed for a long time), run-down (neglected) (ex.2-6 p.12)
  • Grammar focus: conjunctions (Ex. 3-5 p.13, and examples on pp.150-151)
-To show contrast (although, while, whereas, yet)
-To add information: and & nor (he wasn't afraid of taking risks, nor did he worry)
-To give a condition: as long as/provided that/unless/if/if only + conditional
-To give a reason: as, because, since, and so.
  • Writing skills lesson - writing an essay. We went through a range of useful cohesive devices using the Word document.  We analysed a model essay answer on p.169 and mentioned the following points:
    Plan your essay well
-Structure your essay well using paragraphs
-Use a semi-formal register as well as appropriate language
-Vary your grammatical structures (passive and active voices)
    -Do not go off topic
-Focus on the process of writing: Have you answered the question? Have you referred to the checklist? Have you proofread your final draft and checked spelling and grammar?
  • We analysed good and bad essay plans (ex.3 p.14) and we practiced writing an essay plan (ex.5 p.14).

ASSIGNMENT: students must submit the essay by November 8th. The essay question can be found on p.14 (ex.5). Please remember to refer to the checklist on 166 once you have finished. Students can find useful phrases on pp.167-168.

N.B. Students who were absent for Friday's lesson on essay writing should ask me (in class, or by email, or during my ricevimento) about submitting the essay assignment. E-mail: christina.osullivan2@unibo.it. Ricevimento: 2-3pm in Via Cartoleria, Studio 120, Scala B.

Homework: work on compound words p.8 (ex.1), conjunctions (ex.1 p.10) and reading comprehension p.11 (ex. 3, 5 and 6) p.10.
