Professional experience

Oct. 2015 – onwards        Head of Research and Policy and Co-founder, Agency for Peacebuilding (AP) (Director from October 2015 to May 2023). Establishment, development and management of AP as a non-profit organization focused on advocacy, evaluation, research, training and field support in the peacebuilding and conflict prevention sector. Coordinator for different partnerships and field activities. Advocacy at the national and European level (Focal Point at the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office, EPLO). Several assignments (conflict analysis, assessment, baselines, M&E, etc.) and projects for regional organizations (e.g., EU, IGAD, OSCE), research institutes, international NGOs, local authorities and international networks. Coordination of different research projects on peacebuilding, Triple Nexus and good governance. Establishment and planning of the annual international event Bologna Peacebuilding Forum (since 2019) in partnership with the Johns Hopkins University and other institutions.

 

Sept. 2015 – onwards    Associate Fellow, Istituto Affari Internazionali (IAI). Thematic areas: peace, security and governance in Africa, EU Foreign Policy and EU civilian crisis management, development cooperation, and peacebuilding.
Main current and recent activities: I. Coordinator of the project “Out of the security deadlock: challenges and choices in the Sahel”; II. Project “African Futures 2030” (2019-20) led by the EUISS; III. Focal Point for the European Think Tanks Group - ETTG (2017-20); Focal Point for the T20 Africa Task Force (2017- 20).

Main past activities: I. Research and analysis for the revision and implementation of the EU Global Strategy (2015-16); II. Coordination of the project “The security-migration-development nexus revised: a perspective from the Sahel” (2017-18); III. Project “The international strategic dimension of Sub-Saharan Africa: Peace, Security and Development in the Horn of Africa” (2015-16). IV. Member of the partnership “African Futures” (2017), led by the EUISS; V. Contributor to the EU Horizon 2020 project “Preventing and Responding to Conflict: Developing EU CIVilian CAPabilities for a Sustainable Peace - EU-CIVCAP” (2015-18); VI. Coordinator of the project ‘Governance and security in the Sahel’ (2018 - ); VII. Coordinator for “Somali Perspectives: Institutional and Policy Challenges”, high level dialogue with representatives from different Somali State Regions (2016-17).

Oct. 2013 – March 2015 Director, Rondine Cittadella della Pace. Manager and facilitator among MA students of the International Student Hall (residence for students from different cultures and countries in conflict, in particular Balkans, Caucasus, Middle East, Pakistan, USA and Sudan). Director of training and educational programmes. Co-designer of national and international projects.

June 2004 – May 2013   Director (2009-2013), Policy Officer (2004-2009), Centro Studi Difesa Civile (CSDC). Advocacy at the national and European level. Representative Steering Committee member of the European Network for Civil Peace Service (EN.CPS). Elected member of the Steering Committee of the European Peacebuilding Liaison Office (2012-14). Coordinator of a three-year peacebuilding project in Moldova-Transnistria. Research and policy analysis on peacebuilding, EU Foreign Policy, conflict prevention and related issues. Research on the nexus between development, human rights and migration, including field research in Italy, Latvia, Romania and Spain. Organization of an international executive training course for civil servants and NGOs’ staff.

August 2018 – onwards    Evaluator, Search for Common Ground (SFCG). Final evaluation the 24-month project “Inuka!” – Community-Led Security Approaches to Violent Extremism in Coastal Kenya” implemented in four counties with support from the US State Department’s Democracy, Human Rights and Labour Bureau (DRL).

August 2018 – Feb. 2019   Leading Evaluator, GVC-We World. Evaluation of two EU Aid Volunteers projects.

March – June 2018            Leading Evaluator, Oxfam. Evaluation of Oxfam’s work to increase citizen engagement and influence on agriculture policies and practices in Burkina Faso and Tanzania, with fieldwork in Tanzania. Focus on local and national advocacy processes lead by women smallholder farmers.

Nov. 2017 – Feb. 2018      Facilitator and Researcher, Municipality of Bologna. Facilitation and analysis for the writing of the Local Action Plan for the integration and human rights of migrants. Research on new forms of participation of migrants at the local level in the framework of a European project.

June – Oct. 2017                Consultant, CONCORD Europe (European Confederation of Relief and Development NGOs). Research, support and facilitation for CONCORD’s position on the European Union’s Multiannual Financial Framework post-2021.

August – Nov. 2016           Evaluator, Search for Common Ground (SFCG). Final evaluation of the project "Madam President" implemented in Jordan, Lebanon, Palestine and Tunisia and financed by USAID. Fieldwork in Tunisia.

March – June 2016            Leading Evaluator, Search for Common Ground (SFCG). Final evaluation of the 24-month project “Promoting Healthy State-Citizen Relations in Africa” implemented in Kenya, Nigeria and Tanzania and financed by USAID. Fieldwork in Tanzania.

Oct. 2015 – Jan. 2016        Consultant, Kvinna till Kvinna Foundation. Assessment of the potential establishment of Kvinna till Kvinna in the Horn of Africa (focusing on the eight IGAD countries and with a regional perspective). Thematic focus mainly on: conflict and security situation, women and women's movements, human rights, stakeholders and donors.

Sept. – Nov. 2015              Consultant, Crisis Management Initiative (CMI). Organization of a study visit in South Tyrol for an official high-level delegation from Moldova, including its autonomous region of Gagauzia. The visit aimed to normalize relations between the central level of the Moldovan Government and the autonomous region of Gagauzia.

May – July 2015                 Evaluator, Conciliation Resources (CR). Mid-term evaluation of the project “Building peace in Mindanao through public participation in governance” co-financed by the European Union. Fieldwork in the Philippines.
