Scientific Research Fields

A) Evaluation of benefits from natural resources

This is the main research field. The methodology for evaluating non-marketable benefits from natural resources has been applied to Mditerranean beaches and nature parks. These valuation researches were financed by the EU within the multidisciplinary research projects BEACHMED-e and DELOS , and by the Italian Ministry of University and Research, within a multidisciplinary research project PRIN - Progetti di Ricerca di Interesse Nazionale - 2005. The method applied is the Contingent Valuation Method (CVM).

A1) The aim of the European research project INTERREG IIIC, BEACHMED-e (Strategic management of beach protection measures for the sustainable development of the Mediterranean coastal areas), 2006-2008, sub-project ICZM-MED (Concerted actions, tools and criteria for the implementation of the Integrated Coastal Zone Management in the Mediterranean) was to study coastal management from an integrated point of view, i.e.taking into account all their different aspects. Five Mediterranean regions - Emilia-Romagna, Lazio and Liguria (Italy), Languedoc-Roussillon Region (France), and East-Macedonia and Thrace (Greece)- were involved. As regards Emilia-Romagna, the CVM is applied in order to estimate benefits from the conservation of the regional beach of Riccione and Misano Adriatico. In addition, public stakeholders’ opinions have been collected about ICZM in these Regions.

A2) DELOS (environmental DEsign of LOw crested coastal defence Structures) project, EU Fifth Framework Programme, 1998 – 2002, designed to study from the engineering, biological/ecological and economic points of view the complex issue of European coastal management mainly as regards beaches under erosion. Numerous European partners (Universities and Research Centres) were involved. Within the UNIBO research group, I was responsible for studying five Italian case-studies from the economic point of view. The CVM was applied for estimating recreational benefits from beach use in different conditions (status quo, erosion and conservation) in four sites (Lido di Dante, Trieste, Pellestrina Island and Ostia), and non-use benefits (bequest value, existence value and option value) as regards the conservation of Venice. In particular, as regards the Lido di Dante beach the value of benefits from biodiversity has been estimated.

A3) The aim of the research project ‘Indicators of vegetation state and changes, and socio-economic evaluation of pastoral oligotrophic communities with a view to their conservative management’, funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (PRIN) 2005, was to study grassland management and the conservation of its biodiversity from the economic, agronomical and ecological points of view. The CVM has been applied in order to estimate the benefits from the conservation of biodiversity in two Italian parks: the Park of Monte Sole and the Park of the Lakes of Suviana and Brasimone.

C) Microeconomics

Tourism is today an important economic sector, mainly based on the use of natural resources for recreational and cultural activities. The economic behaviour of tourists has been studied from the microeconomic point of view.

D) Rational Behaviour of Economic Agents and Macroeconomics

Starting from J. M. Keynes’ philosophical and economic thought, particular attention has been paid to the analysis of rational economic behaviour in situations (also described through mathematical models) of risk and uncertainty where a probability cannot be established for computing the expected consequences of economic choices. Specific attention has been paid to the rational behaviour of policy-makers.
