Interaction and Dynamics between Judaism and Christianity in Historical Perspective: An Emic Mapping

Miriam Benfatto (Alma Mater-Università di Bologna) / Angela Cimino (Deutsches Historisches Institut in Rom / FSCIRE) / Margherita Mantovani (Universität Hamburg, Institut für Jüdische Philosophie und Religion)

Jewish-Christian interaction has existed since the inception of Christianity. Jews and Christians encountered and responded to one another over the centuries in a variety of contexts and fashions. These encounters had a significant impact on the experiences and cultures of both the Jewish minority and the Christian majority. The early modern period was a time of intense cultural and religious interaction. This panel will address the wide array of cultural, religious, and social dynamics shaping Jewish experience and its cross-cultural connections in the Christian world. The significance of the relationship between Jews and Christians throughout the ages has become even more marked since the concept of dialogue between religions became popular in the period following World War II.This panel would like to explore the complex relationships existing between Judaism and Christianity and their internal perspectives over a broad spectrum of historical periods and methodological approaches. The aim of this panel is to disclose how the two religious systems experienced and addressed their proximity, considering the internal perceptions of their interaction from the early modern period onward.
