The war in Ukraine is a watershed event in recent European history. The stakes have never been so high since the Cold war’s confrontation between the superpowers. Several aspects of the crisis that let to the war and of the ongoing conflict need to be explored and understood in a multidisciplinary perspective. For this reason, the University of Bologna, in collaboration with the Master on East European and Eurasian Studies (MIREES) has organized a roundtable aimed at exploring the dynamics that have led to Russia’s decision to attack Ukraine, the developments of the attack, the actors at play, the reaction of the international community and the repercussions for Europe and for the world. “It is difficult to predict, especially the future” (Niels Bohr)... If in early January 2020 a security specialist or an International Relations scholar was called to make a prediction on the future of world politics, his/her attention would have been captured by the challenge represented by global terrorism or cyber insecurity, or the continuation of war in Syria, Yemen, Libya, etc. He or She would have probably speculated on the ability of our societies to develop resilience in front of challenges related to human-made external aggressions, economic crises or social unrest. Yet very few would have forecasted that the greatest challenge to politics and societies would have come from a virus. And yet, here we are, trying to understand what impact Covid_19 has made on our lives… This series of Guest Lectures aims to contribute to a collective reflection on how Covid_19 has impacted upon international politics, amplifying or changing existent trends within countries (Russia), international organizations (NATO and the EU), specific policy areas (migration, multilateralism, cybersecurity).

EPR was established in 2014 to provide a platform for young academics to critically explore the policies of individual European states and the European Union. La Winter School si propone di analizzare le difficoltà della governance di problemi globali, guardandone le sfide principali, il funzionamento in ambiti specifici (terrorismo, riscaldamento globale, migrazioni), il ruolo dei principali attori, e l’impatto di trasformazioni tecnologiche dalla innegabile portata.

Si rivolge in particolare agli studenti di studi politici internazionali, scienze politiche, scienze sociali per la cooperazione, la sicurezza, la risoluzione dei conflitti che stanno concludendo il primo ciclo triennale e si stanno orientando sulle loro scelte future, nonché agli studenti del biennio magistrale e ai neolaureati. Il corso è rivolto anche ad un pubblico più ampio di cittadini che vogliano approfondire la conoscenza di tematiche di indiscutibile rilevanza politica e sociale.

I docenti saranno disponibili per domande e approfondimenti nel contesto di ogni singola lezione, articolata in una parte frontale e una parte di approfondimento con domande da parte degli studenti e discussione. Ai partecipanti saranno resi disponibili materiali di lettura e approfondimento sulle tematiche trattate nelle lezioni, tramite accesso al sito del corso.
