Mauro Perani was born in Castel Goffredo (Mantua) on 16 December 1949 from Bruno and Nelia Maria Mantovani. After completing his studies at the Liceo classico Virgilio in Mantua, he graduated at Bologna University in Philosophy in 1975 with a thesis on The Jewish conception of time, and newly in 1982 in Oriental History with a thesis on The Jewish presence in Sardinia. In the summers 1981 and 1982 and then in 1983 he studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem with an annual scholarship of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Former full Professor of Hebrew at the Department of Cultural Heritage of Bologna University, in Ravenna Campus, is now teaching contract professor. President of the European Association for Jewish Studies from 2006 to 2010 and current President of the Italian Association for the Study of Judaism, since 1984 he works at the Italian Genizah Project. Visiting professor at the Frenkel Center for Jewish Studies of the University of Michigan USA in 2008, in 2013 he received a PhD honoris causa from the Hebrew University for his research on Hebrew manuscripts. His bibliography encompasses dozens of books and hundreds of articles.
