Principal Investigator: Prof. Catherine Best (Professor and Chair in Psycholinguistic Research - MARC Auditory Institute - University of Western Sydney Sydney, Australia and Senior Scientist at Haskins Laboratories, New Haven, CT, U.S.). Grant proposal funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Communicative Disorders - National Institutes of Health (NIH), U.S. The main aim of the research project is to investigatre the emergence of phonology in the child and the effects of this process on the perception of native and non-native speech sounds.

Project Title: "La fonetica di sillaba accento e ritmo linguistico in italiano e inglese". In collaborazione con Prof. Carol. A. Fowler (Professor of Psychology of Language at the University of Connecticut and Senior Scientist at Haskins Laboratories, New Haven Connecticut, U.S.). The project examines the effects of accentual prominence, syllable structure and linguistic rhythm on the acoustic and articulatory properties of vowels in languages, such as italian and english, traditionally classified by phonologists and phoneticians as belonging to opposite rhythmic typologies (syllable- vs. stress-timed languages).
