Unfolding Intermediality.
A Semantic Web Approach for Integrating Text and Image through Annotation.

Abstract

Interoperable protocols such as IIIF have accelerated the dissemination of digital collections on the Web, enabling the reuse of image-based data. In this context, scholarly annotation serves to articulate interpretive processes and to semantically enrich visual resources by positioning them within broader networks of information.

This work investigates digital annotation as a hermeneutic practice for examining intermedial relations, with a specific focus on the phenomenon of ekphrasis, the verbal description of an artwork. Addressing limitations in current Digital Humanities models, the research introduces a conceptual model and ontology (INTERIM) for modeling text-image connections by integrating IIIF and the Web Annotation Ontology with domain-specific formalizations, thereby enabling the analysis of complex intermedial phenomena and the explicit representation of these links through semantic annotation.
