Prof. Marco Rinaldo Oggioni is an expert in bacterial genetics and pathogenesis of infection, since 2020 he is Professor at FaBiT at the University of Bologna (Italy). Since 2026 MRO also joined the Research Platform RESTORE (REsearch on Tissue and Organ REgeneration) of the IRCCS Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria of Bologna (Italy). In addition MRO is Emeritus Professor of the University of Leicester, Leicester (UK)
MROs main area of research interest focusses on the discovery of specific details in the interaction of pathogenic bacteria with the host that could lead to new treatment options. Most recent contributions are the elucidation of the initial phases of systemic bacterial infection by ex vivo normothermic machine perfusion which not only elucidate concepts of host-species-specific infectious disease potential of bacteria, but also human-specific management of bacterial clearance in the by splenic macrophages. Additional research interests include the investigation into phase variable epigenetic control in bacteria and antimicrobial drug resistance.
